I have a recently bought Sony DCR DCD-405 camcorder with miniDVD. I have recorded an event and have 2 miniDVD's of video which I want to put on a regular-sized DVD.

My questions are:

1. The video files on the miniDVD are .VOB. What format is that? EMC seems to be able to import in MPEG. Is that going to compress any further (will I lose any quality)? Should I use other format for importing/capturing? Is avi an option at all?
2. When I open myDVD and try to Add Movie from hard drive (I copied the VOB files from miniDVD to hard drive), it seems to only open each miniDVD set of files as one movie. Why doesn't myDVD read it in as chapters, as I see it on the camcorder Play menu?
3. Why can't I capture from hard drive?

Thanks in advance ...

Once your files are on the hard drive, make sure that Windows is not hiding your file extensions and then change the name of the file to (name).mpg.  This works for most people.

You can add each mpg file as a separate movie.  If you don't want them separated that way, drag the files to Video Wave in the order you wan them.  Then go to MyDVD add that project and then set up a chapters submenu

Don't know if it will re-encode.  Depends on the format of that camera.  Should really already be in the correct format.

The answer to your number three question is - no one knows if this was intended or just came out that way.
Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.

Hi folks,

I'm having a similar problem --  I've taken the .vob files from the mini-dvd, copied to my HD, and changed them over to mpg.

Now, when I "add movie" it only adds 29 seconds of a 20 minute clip. . .I went back to WMP and it plays the same 29 seconds BUT if I dink around with the sliding progression bar all of the video is there but it will only play a few seconds of it which leads me to believe that the 1GB .vob file I converted to .mpg is still all there but it just won't play the whole thing. . .

I am going to try to convert the file using info from another post:

"What I've done in the past with minidisks is use a handy piece of software called VOB2MPEG (free). This will do a proper conversion of all the VOB files into one giant MPEG file. From there you can edit with Roxio."

I'll see if that gets all the info (e.g. the full 20 minutes).

Also, I have emc 8 essentials. . .do that NOT have videowave in it?

Am I on the right track or am I doing something wrong?  Any insight would be appreciated and the simpler the better!!

Put the mini-DVD back in your camcorder and Finalize it. The you should be able to import it or copy vob's and change them to mpg's.
