im using the red white and yellow cables from my 360 and the preview and recordings are all in black and white is it something im doing wrong?

Not enough information. What TV? What computer - complete specs or make and complete model number (if it is a laptop, look on the bottom).
Did you look at any of the pinned posts at the top of this section of the forum?

What you're doing wrong is trying to use a Composite input on a Component device if you're using the Yellow as your video.
That's the wrong XBox cable.You need the HD Component cable adapter.
