Hi..Happy easter.

I am importing an analog video using the DVD-Video menu.  I am importing using the canopus ADVC-110 digitizer machine.  I follow these steps:
1. Select the dvd-video option
2. in media browser select i movie events folder
3. In options: Encoding Automatic - best; give the disc a name
4. import - give the new clip a description
5. below it shows 4.22 gb space - dvd - destination: optiarc dvd ad-5690H as selected: however, there are other choices: recorder settings/disc image/ other shared recorder
6. When import it uses only 721. mb. However, there are other tapes that are much longer.   ((I can import directly into imovie with no problem but i do not think i get the same quality as toast 11)
7.  now that the file is imported..

What is my next step: Must i copy to a hard drive or disc image or is there a way to save the file directly to I movie as an Mpeg 2 or 4..
My concern is that the longer movies will not fit on a disc.

also, once i import the file it is a .toast.. so what do i do next to bring the video into imovie.. how do i save it on my imac..

Thanks for your help..

Looking at this and your other posts I think I understand what you're working with. The first step is to capture the DV video with the ADVC capture device. In the past Toast couldn't capture from those but you're indicating that the current version can do this. The way I would have approached this is to use QuickTime Player to capture the video. Then I'd choose DVD video as the format in the Toast Video window and add the captured video. Once there I can do some basic editing to trim out any segments I don't want on the final DVD. I'd also keep the total amount of content to about 2-1/2 hours per DVD for best quality. I'd set up the menu the way I want and click the burn button to create the video DVD or choose Save as Disc Image. Toast then encodes the video to MPEG 2 as part of making the video DVD. If I make a disc image I burn it to DVD using the Image File setting i the Copy window.

If I want the video in iTunes I drag it to the Toast Convert window and click the red button. I then choose Apple TV as the format and click Okay.

Your original captured video remains unaltered on the hard drive. You can back that up to disc using the Data window if you want to keep it as a backup.

If you want to use iMovie's editing tools such as titling, transitions and audio tracks, you can capture directly from the ADVC device to iMovie rather than using QuickTime Player.
I'm just a fellow Toast-user so please don't blame Roxio for any misguidance I may provide. And do let me know if your issue gets solved. Cheers from Eugene, Oregon!

2.where do I find the quicktime player; is that part of  Toast or on the iMac. Once found, how what steps to i need to follow to direct quicktime player to capture the video and where to i put the file? Do I place the file in events folder?

3. if  I  use blu ray;  can i keep the files longer length

4.  Once burned how do i get the file into i move or some other video editing software..

you do a great service .. and i very much appreciate your great help...

You said it is an ADVC-110 so I shortened the name. I used to have a similar model when the brand name was Canopus. It is a Firewire capture device, right?

QuickTime Player is in the Applications folder. When you open it choose New Movie Recording from its File menu. You should be able to select the Firewire device in the menu that appears after you click the downward-facing triangle near the right of the control bar in the video display window. It probably will default to your built-in iSight camera so what you'll see is yourself until you select a different camera input. I don't know for sure that QuickTime Player will see your Firewire device. If it doesn't then just use iMovie instead to import the video. I'm on the road for a few days and can't check what works best for Firewire video capture but I'm hoping that QuickTime Player can do it.

I've never made a standard-definition movie using the Blu-ray plugin but yes, you should be able to put many hours of SD video on a Blu-ray disc if you choose the Blu-ray disc setting in the Video window. I don't know how many hours. Look at the space-remaining scale as a guide.

You will want to do this before you burn the disc. The video you're capturing with your Firewire device is in DV format which can be imported directly to any video-editing application. Just choose Import from the application's File menu and it will happen. If you know in advance you want to use iMovie then capture directly into iMovie in the first place. When you create a new movie project in iMovie and later open Toast, that project appears in the Video tab of the Toast Media Browser where you then can drag it over to the Video window. iMovie can export to the Apple TV setting and send to iTunes so you don't need Toast to do that. But you will need Toast to made a Blu-ray video disc or a video DVD disc.
