I have a number of MPEG files that I want to burn to a double-layer DVD.

These movies are listed in MyDVD's "Select Media File" dialog as about 850 mb, 1 hour long, 352x480,29.97 fps, 16-bit.
When I add any of these movies to my project, the estimate size used of my project jumps by 4250 mb.  As a result, I can't even fit two of these on a single 8.5GB DL DVD.

I would've expected with the movies being 1 hour long that I'd be able to fit 7 or 8 of them.  Why won't MyDVD let me add more of these?

I've installed the 8.05 update, but that didn't help.

File size means absolutely nothing.  It is the length of time that controls.  You can figure 1 hour of video, at the best setting, will fit on a standard 4.7GB DVD.  Just less than 2 hours on an 8.5GB DVD.

You sure aren't going to fit 7 hours of video on one DVD, standard or DL.

You're right.  I didn't mean 7 hours of video, but definitely more than 2.

I have fit more than 2 hours on a DVD before.  I have another DL DVD I burned using MyDVD a few weeks ago and I fit three 1-hour movies and one 2-hour movie on it (totaling 5 hours).

That's why I'm not sure why MyDVD says over half of my DL DVD is full when I add this one hour MPEG movie to it.

These sound like MPEG 1 files. The LOWEST setting that MyDVD supports is 352X240 at 4.5 Mbps.  If you check those files with GSpot, I would expect them to be around 1.2Mbps which is not supported.

MyDVD defaults to 'fit to disc'. You should first open the Project Settings and change that to LOWEST. You might be able to get two of them on a disc. If you still need room, change the AC3 audio bitrate to something lower. Lower video bitrates is something I wished they would support in future versions or updates.

I am having a similar problem. At the best quality I can not fit a one hour video on a standard dvd. I get a message indicating the destination disk does not have sufficient room. The info on the MY DVD panel indicates the disk is 4.7G and the production is 3.8G but it will not burn. I can make 30 min. DVDs OK except that  when I try to eliminate the menu audio, nothing happens. The menu audio remains. I never had these problems with EMC 7 or 7.5.

The 1 hour number is based on a movie with the absolute minimum of whistles and bells!

Nothing is free, so if you animate your menus, add audio apply transitions, create chapters, etc., you are eating up your space.

Any new software requires a learning curve. Things are not in the same old places and sometimes the names are changed to keep us confused.

What shows up when you click the little speaker icon?
