AVI is a "container" file that gets filled with compressed video, so you can have all sorts of AVI files depending on which compressor is used on the video.
To handle any AVI you must have a working COmpressor/DECompressor [CODEC] set in your system which matches the one used to make the particular AVI.
Examples of video CODEC names are DivX; XviD; H264; IV32; IV50; MP42 and so on. Since the audio in these files is usually compressed too, there is a similar situation for audio CODECs such as AC3; MP3; and so on.
If MyDVD Express won't accept a particular AVI file it's either because you don't have the required CODECs installed on your machine, or because the AVI is using one of the very popular video or audio CODECs which have been deliberately disabled in the Easy CD and DVD Burning software suite.
There is a small, FREE, and safe program called the GSpot Codec Information Appliance [or just GSpot] which you can download from HERE (link}.
If you run GSpot and drag your AVI file onto the GSpot display, the program will show you what Video and Audio CODECs were used to make the AVI.
If you would tell me what Video CODEC is shown, I can tell you if it's one you should be able to install, or if it's one of those which have been deliberately disabled in this software.

If you are creating a proper video DVD playable on DVD players then the DVd should be automatically finalized. No further action is required on your part.

Hi Reble,
The video code DX50 is the 4cc code for DivX, one of the most popular video CODECs around when this software was written.
It is one of the CODECs which have been deliberately disabled by the vendor in Easy CD and DVD Burning. There's a discussion on that in THIS TOPIC.
I'm afraid that you will need different software to handle AVI files compressed with DivX, which seems a bit ironic since Roxio acquired DivX a couple of years later.
Sorry I don't have any experience with the opposition Xilisoft software, so I'll have to leave you with 'myguggi' for that question.

When EMC 10 was cut down to make Easy CD and DVD Burning, the Help file wasn't altered so it refers to a lot of things that the cut-down suite doesn't have.
One of those is the "Edit in MyDVD" button you saw mentioned in paragraph 7.
The full suite has the ability to flick a project from MyDVD Express into the full MyDVD, and that's why the button appears in the full suite.
You don't have the full MyDVD, so please ignore that part of the help file.

Easy CD and DVD Burning [in the red box] is a cut-down version of Easy Media Creator 10, which is now a "legacy" product.
Following that came Creator 2009, Creator 2010, Creator 2011, and Creator 2012.
Going on previous years, Creator 2013 should be along around the end of this month or beginning of September.
