Hi,

I just received 4 DVDs from our wedding photographer for our photos. It came with a "Roxio Restore" software in it. I believe these are backups created with Toast (I followed the link provided in the restore software, but it does not specify which version of Toast was used).  

When I run the Roxio Restore it keeps asking me to insert disc #1 even though that's the disc in the drive. I noticed when Roxio Restore asks for the disc by name, it has "/" in it (e.g. "Disc 5/20/12#1") while the real disc name seems to have underscore (Disc 5_20_12#1). Could this be the issue? Is there any way to restore these discs?

I know I can copy the individual files manually, but some photos are split into multiple discs, so that would be the last option.

I use Windows 7 x64, and I tried two different DVD drives.

I've never used Roxio Restore with a PC so I don't know what to suggest. It's a good guess that Toast wrote the PC (ISO 9660) disc with the underscore while writing the Mac (HFS+) disc with the slash. If you know anyone with a Mac they could probably run Roxio Restore without any difficulty. It's a shame that the photographer didn't turn on the option in Toast not to split any files when spanning discs.

Thank you for the answer. You are right, this seems to be affecting Windows users.

I opened the disc index.plist file on the disc which is an XML file that lists all the files and the discs involved in the backup job. I can confirm that while almost all slash characters are replaced with underscore, volume names for the restore were left untouched. This seems to be a small bug in Toast (but again, I still don't know which version) where it doesn't replace all the slashes in the config file before writing. If I am desperate enough I could probably create those DVDs with the new config file, but at this moment I will just wait for the photographer to resend me those 3 files.

This is the part from index.plist file, in case this is a new version of Toast, and developers are interested in bug reports:

Notice PC Labels are corrected but not PC Volumes.
They have separate entries for Macs so this disc would probably work for Macs.

I have the same problem, but I am running in Mac!  How can I solve it? And my disc just won't come out no matter what I do!  Help!

Eject the disc either using Disk Utility or using the eject command in the Toast Recorder menu. If neither of those work restart your Mac while holding down the Command+E keys.

Dear Eugene:

Thanks for your reply. I have tried your ways many many ..times and hope someday a 'miracle' would come! And nothing happened.  It kept showing a window 'double-click to restore spanned data'. And the disk just won't come out!

Yes, I am on a Mac as well and Restore won't recognize the second disk, even though it loads without problem in the finder and other files on the disk are accessible. Seems that Restore is bogus for spanned files.

Yesterday I needed to restore some photos from a 2-disc spanned set. I inserted disc 1 and launched Roxio Restore to find the files. When I clicked the restore button the disc was ejected I was asked to insert the second disc. The files then were copied successfully. However, when it finished and I tried to click Okay on the message that appeared, the cursor went nuts and my screen's display started shaking. I finally was able to quit Roxio Restore and my Mac returned to normal. So I'm afraid of Roxio Restore. What I'm going to do in the future is use DiskCatalogMakerRE that's included with the Toast bundle to create its own directory of what's on the discs for locating and copying files. Still, if any files are spanned then Roxio Restore has to be used to rejoin them. The version of Roxio Restore that is included with Toast 11.1 is 1.0.5.

I agree with toastee, for safety, file should not be split.  That being said, i have split accross 3 bd-rs with large file sizes.  I usually check them with roxio restore right away as this is a long process with 3 bdrs.  I know I have used disc recovery with success, but cannot recall if it was a spanned disc or dvd-video.
