I used Copy and Convert to trim a video (from a file) to save as another file. I haven't used this feature before and I'm not trying to actually convert a video but to merely trim a previously downloaded video, rename it, and save it for viewing in it's reduced size.  I would assume this reduced video should be of identical quality as it's source on my computer.  Copy and Convert forces you to save it as a specific type (it was a wmv so I chose wmv 720p) and there is a loss of resolution and it's more jagged.  I tried MP4 and that didn't do anything either.  Trying to trim it in videowave didn't work since every time I'd trim and select starting or ending point, it would revert to the beginning of the video.  Any suggestions.  Thanks.

You will only lose resolution if you specify an output that has a lower resolution. What is the format and resolution of the original source file. Just saying the source was wmv does not mean very much as there are several "wmv formats" with different resolutions.

Thanks Digital Guru for responding.  This was a downloaded DVDRip and properties indicates an AVI video clip.  I'm merely trying to just copy a trimmed version.  The only WMV file types of WMV9, HD 720p and HD1080i.  I chose 720p which is superior to the quality of my source clip.  I read you can use videowave but, in trim mode, when it opens into the production area, it doesn't play, however you can manually move the set and end point bars to view a frame.  This obviously is not that accurate.  When I tried to set the start/end, the setting would ignore the present position and go back to the beginning. But in copy and convert I was able to at least have control.  So again, converting is not what I'm really concerned with at this time, but trying to get a duplicate copy.  Do you think I should just buy the 2012 version or does that make a difference?  Thanks.

If that is a rip of a commercial DVD then discussion ends right here since what you are doing is illegal and no such discussion is allowed on these boards.

Digital Guru:  I understand your position and I'm not using copyrighted commercial material.  NBC hosts episodes of old series from the 50's for free viewing on the internet and I found a downloadable version of the episode for future viewing and decided use this to understand this software.  I originally tried using old VHS tapes which I burned but the quality was lousy. Since it appeared to be very good quality, I'm assuming it's the equivalent of a DVD or at the least restored to a higher quality.  However, windows properties check indicates it's an  AVI video.  My test case is to start off with trimming.  I'm not looking to convert it to anything but merely copy a trimmed segment and get equal quality.  I can't conclusively say what the original format was.  So based on what I described, and forgetting about this episode, if you can explain how one merely copies a video file (since I have no idea what the precise format was and just want to replicate the quality), that will be a good start.  As I mentioned I tried videowave and that didn't work. I selected trim and it displayed as a video in production but the trimming function kept resetting to an earlier scene in the video(basically the beginning).  My Creator 10 manual mentions copy and convert as a way to trim a video, which works, except I'm getting a loss of resolution.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Could you give a link to the show. I could try a download and check its properties.

In the meantime, launch Videowave, add the video to the timeline, right click on the video and then select properties. In the Properties window that opens, select the Details tab and it should show you what the basic video properties are. Those are then the settings to use when you output to a new video file.

BTW, exactly what do you mean by Trim. In video work it usually refers to removing part of the video at the beginning or end of a video clip. If you want to remove a section in the middle of a video then we usually refer to that as "deleting" or "removing" video. Trimming and deleting are done differently in Videowave.

Is this the way you are deleting parts of the video using Video Wave?   Watch video.

If you are having trouble with the timeline, remembert hat you can easily make it longer or shorter.  Navigation is much improved.  Yes, the program is designed to skip forward to the earlier clip when you delete a section.  Changin the timeline length helps getting back to where you want.

Also, in Video Wave, if you right click on the video and select trim, you will get an editor similar to what you like,

EMC 10 is an old program and I have no idea what format options are available. Anytime you increase the resolution you get lower quality since any "imperfections" are magnified. You could try a 3rd part utility like Vdub where you can keep the original resolution.

Thanks for the input DG.  I think I'm overdue for Creator 2012.  That should solve my problems.  Jack
