10.1 is an old  Dell version of the software;  you will have to get help from them.  Did you update your operating system from XP to Vista or Windows 7?   That may be your problem.

Laptop - Windows 7 Home
Dell XPS 1645, Intel I7 1,6G with overdrive ,4G RAM, 1 GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730, Sound Blaster X-Fi MB Panzer, 500G hard drive.

Apple =OSX 10.5

If you got it on a disc it doesn't sound like a Dell OEM version, since they are usually preinstalled and without an installer disc.
It could be the full Roxio 10.1.x suite. Can you tell us the full version and build numbers that you get when you go to Help >About this software?

Can you tell us what you mean by "it keeps uploading the basics" please?
