EMC 8,  File Names over 64 chars?   I'm using Roxio Creator Classic 8.05.

I know I had this working with v7.5.  After I updated to 8.05 in May 2006, I haven't been able to get file with names > 64 to burn.  They get  truncated to  left(filename,60).ext   That's 64 total.

I've tried every combination of File System & Bridge.  None of them lay the files down properly.

What's the bottom line?  Can I burn file names > 64 with Roxio 8.05 at all??  Please tell me how?

Background:
CD is a 'Data' CD, only intended for newer Windows PCs.  CD is our small company's software product demonstration disk.  We include MS SQL 2005 Express Edition as part of the demo install to show our product.   MS SQL installer is not a simple MSI file, but a rather large folder structure of many files.  No way around this.
Example:  x86_microsoft.vc80.atl_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.42_x-ww_6e805841.manifest

I'm at a loss on what to do.  I'd hate to have to look at Nero, which seems to have its own set of problems.  We've been using Roxio for many years and would hate to have to acquire/install/learn/troubleshoot something else.

Any hints would really be appreciated.
Thanks,
John

Well after reading your post, I went ahead and made a text file with an 80 character filename. Opened up Creator Classic and burned it (to an ISO). Didn't have any problem doing it.
Then using the Image Loader I tested it and found that the file was intact with its full filename.

So, I guess there is just something wrong with your install or something. I'm using EMC 8 Deluxe Suite... are you?

EDIT:
Ok I tried this again but this time I just made alot of folders with 10 character names and put them inside eachother. Now it complains that the File path is too long.

Is this the problem your having?

Thanks Liqvid for the reply,

I purchased online in May.
Bundle NA - Easy Media Creator 8 Suite (ESD) + $20 Mail-in Rebate (#300046075) 1 Unit(s)
I'm not sure if ESD means deluxe or not, but does 'Deluxe' version make a difference?  Aren't we using basically the same Roxio Creator Classic 8.05?

I just tried what you said, I burned to an ISO instead of directly to CD.  I opened the ISO file using WinISO program.    Darn, the SAME issue.  The same files have been truncated to 64.

What setting do you have on Project_Settings???

Here's a print screen of my settings.

UPDATE.  Whoa....   Is this a bug in Roxio?

Like you, I created a 80+ TXT filename.  And it burned properly.  But the other file didn't.  Hmmm...

Here's the picture to prove it.   The MS file is really named:
   x86_microsoft.vc80.atl_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.42_x-ww_6e805841.manifest

Initially I thought maybe the TXT file was being handled differently by Roxio, so as I test, I also added another text file, using the MSSQLFileName.TXT, simply changing the extension to make it look like a TXT file.  Looks like there's something in the MSQLFileName that is messing up Roxio.

Why is the MSSQLFileName confusing Roxio?    :)

'No Bridge' was no help.  As a matter of fact, I couldn't open the created ISO file on my WinXP, nor could I access the CD after I burned the ISO to CD.    I had previously tried all of the various combinations for File System and Bridge, so this comes as no surprise.

I think my previous posts tells the story.  Something wrong with Roxio and certain file names.

Here's another real simple example.  Both file names begin and end with a Z.  Names are nearly identical.  But ZBBB... fails to get named properly.  I'm nearly blue in the face with frustration.  Does anybody know what's going on here?    (Should I start another topic with this picture?)

ESD has nothing to do with the version you have.It means it was the downloaded distribution not the retail Cd.

I may have stumpled on a solution.... for the benefit of the next frustrated user who's reading this....

Answer:  Don't use any RCL file that was ever used with Version 7.5.  Start a new project from Scratch.   My new rcl project is effectively identical to the old, same settings, exact same files and folders.

Solution:  Not 100% sure how I got to this solution, but the CD seems to be laying down properly.
I did three things, in order of likely reason solution occurred:
       1. Created new MY.rcl from scratch, effectively the same as old, but not born with v7.5.
       2. Update Samsung CD-R/RW SW-252S Firmware to R954 from R953.
       3. Update Dell 8400 BIOS to A09 from A08.

The Folder Depth Validation warnings continue to appear, but do not seem to apply.   This is exactly how it used to work with older version 7.5.

I went ahead and tested your theory regarding the .rcl files. But I found that it had no effect.
Steps taken:
-Made a 90 char filename text file with some text in it.
-Made a 10 char folder and put 10 copies of it in itself, then put a copy of the 90 char text file in it (excessively long filepath/name)
-Opened up Creator Classic in 7.5 > made new project to burn these two items > burned to iso > ignored warning > no problems. Works fine.
-Saved project file.

-Opened up Creator Classic in 8 > Opened 7.5 .rcl project file > Burned to iso > ignored warning > no problems. Works fine.

-Opened up Creator Classic in 8 again >  Opened 7.5 .rcl file > Burned to CD > ignored warning > no problems. Works fine.

I would say that possibly the other two things you did resolved the problem, especially the firmware update.

Case closed?

Regarding the Folder depth validation warning...............I use Roxio to do my backups and it appears that there are some major concerns with its ability to do a seamless backup.  I'm not  a computer whiz and don't have the time to function test this software.  Has Roxio made an official statement on a fix?  I just bought Roxio 8 Deluxe based on the "ease of use" information on the box.
