I know I can burn AVCHD footage to a DVD via Toast 10, but can I also burn it to an external hard drive?

I was using FCE 4 on my Mac, and was going to Log and Transfer everything to an external drive.  Problem is, FCE changes all the files to MOV files and drastically increases the size of each file.  I'd like to have the AVCHD footage put right to an external drive for later editing.  Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!
