In timeline, adding music clips. I want one song to end at a certain picture, and a second song to start at the end point. I have gone to "Edit", trim audio and also tried "Split", then delete the part of the first song I don't need. Then I add the second song right behind the first. The titles of both songs show up, but the first song starts over and plays again - not the song that is there. In EMC7 you could go to audio trim, and watch the production in a small screen so as to end the song exactly where you wanted. How do I eliminate the end of the song I don't want.

Before I insert the second song, I play the production, and the song I have clipped ends where I want it to- only when I insert the second, does it repeat. Are we confused yet? What am I doing wrong?? Thanks MK

Why not highlight the audio, put the cursor over the end of the audio and you will see an arrow. You can click there and drag back to where you want the audio to end, insert your next piece either on the same track or use another audio track if you want to overlap it a bit etc. This works unless you are wanting to delete the middle part of the audio. Then you woul have to split and delete the part you want eliminated. I hope I am understanding your question correctly. :)

No, I do not want to delete anything in the middle of the audio, only delete the end. What do you mean by "use another audio track"? I have been putting the music under the production in Timeline. Didn't know I could use another track. And I have highlighted the song, got the arrow, and did drag it to just where I wanted it to end. But when I put the next song in, the first one started over, ever though the title of the second song was showing.

The only way I could get it to work was to add and edit a song, save, exit, go back to main menu, open videowave, open production and work on second song. Even if I saved the production and went right back without exiting the program, it would not work. This was really a pain in the neck. Please give me some advice. Thanks. MK

When you have your project loaded, go into tools and click on options, click on the second tab and choose to delete the proxy audio. Sometimes you will hear the underlining audio there, Try that and then see if when you play it after that you shouldn't hear the audio that you dragged the audio back too. You can apply audio to any of the audio tracks. I am not sure where you started your project from, it is best to construct the project from videowave, aand do all the editing there. Save it, then open up MyDVD and add it to it there. This wasy you will always have a videowave file that you can open up and do editing from. Videowave is much more flexible then MyDVD. When you open MyDVD again, all the changes you made to the videowave project will be reflected there.

Thank you so much. I did not deleter the "proxy" audio yet, as if said something about afftecting my ongoing production, and I'm at a point where I want to finish. But will consider that in the next video. I also do all the project construction in videowave, and after all is done, I then add the music. But, I found the "show/hide" tracks and now see the sound effects track and native background track. I put in some pictures for practice, inserted music in the regular track then in the sound effects track and moved it where I wanted it. This seems to be working much better. Are these the only two I can add music to? I see nothing about "Native sound". Any other hints or explanations you can give me would be greatly appreciated. What exactly does the "proxy" file do? Why would this interfere? Thanks again. MK

You should see a narration track and if I remember correctly it will accept audio. If you double click on the video you will see the internal tracks. That gives you additional tracks. I am not sure why, but sometimes those proxy files will do what you are discribing. In that Show/Hide did a box come up where you can check which tracks you want to show? I am not on a computer that has v8 in it, right now, when I work between various versions I have to check and see if how you find something is the same as what I am working with at the moment. If you need help finding that window let me know. Each time you open up your project it makes a record of what you have done and sometimes it seems like something you might have deleted and changed is still there, such as the audio and can still be heard. I am not a techy so that might not be a good explaination. It has been brought up on the forum every so often and that is the solution for most. Hope this helps. :)

O.K. so far. I think I have done pretty much what you are wanting to do many times. First I open Videowave and add any photos I want. After that when I want music or audio to be added and want several audio files or mucic songs to start and end at a certain slide or photo. I first take that audio or music file into "Sound Editor" program first and expand the graphic line so I can see exactly where I want to start and end it time wise. Play the file til it gets to where I want to end it, then place the cursor at that exact time and drag the cursor to the right clear to the end of the file and right click and chose delete. Now all that is left of that song is just what I have left.(i.e. the first portion) Save that file to another name (that way I still have the original) and then use that edited audio file in the Videowave program. Drag it into the audio track that has the little speaker icon, named "Music".

Now based on how long that audio file is in time, I have to edit the time of each photo slide to match that same time (Example: if I have an audio file that's 1 minute 30 seconds long (90 seconds) and have say 10 photo slides, I change the time for each slide to 9 serconds). BTW, you can also change the end of that edited audio file so that it "fades" out in the last few seconds before the second audio file starts to play. That has a nice effect too.

Now I can go back and do the same thing with as many other audio files that I want to add to my Videowave production. Each time I have edited them for the time I want, I place tthem in the exact audio track as the previous one I added,(one with the speaker Icon) and have them end to end but not over lapping. There are other ways of making all of your audio songs or files placed together in the Sound Editor program but if you have several differenty files and the are all different edited times, I have found it best to just do one at a time. Takes a little more time but when I get done I always have each individual edited audio file saved as well as still having the all the original songs. It's way easier for me to go back and edit the audio file that way if I have to.

I realize this is a pretty "long winded" post, but I hope it will help.

Frank....

Thanks Patty and Frank. I learned alot this time. I did a practice production and used special effects and music tracks. This seems to help. Next production I will delete Proxy files before I start. I also like the idea of editing music in Sound Editor first, but my only problem is that by the time I get out of videowave and into sound editor, I have a senior moment (not uncommon) and forget where I want to clip. I am so thankful to both of you. Will be starting a new production next week, and anxious to see how these tips work. MK

I understand your apprehension to deleting the proxy files, however, after your production is done, try it. I have done it with projects I was working on and it didn't do any harm to the production. Another thing you might try is to burn an .iso file (image) to your hard drive, then open disc copier and copy the .iso to a DVD. They seem to burn better that way and have less compatability problems. Then you can save the .iso on a disc or store it in another hard drive for future use. Doing it this way also makes it easier to copy multiple copies. Just a thought.

Patty is correct here, as usual, on the proxy files. You can delete them at any time. Before or during work on a production. They are simply temporary files used by the preview functions to represent what your output will be when you do output your production.

Thank you for explaining about the proxy files. I am always scared to delete anything I know nothing about. I love the idea of saving the .iso file to a disc for making multiple copies. I did have to make a few copies and did it thru videowave/my dvd. Thanks for all the helpful advise. This will make it a bit easier. MK

A new day, a new production. In timeline I added first song, played great, but wanted a different song. Deleted it. Remembered then to go to "proxy" and cleared it. It still appears on the line - it did not delete. Is that right?? Went back and added song I wanted, first in music track - no sound, then in special effects track - no sound. Mutes are not checked. Shows up in the track, just no sound. Went to sound editor and changed .wma file to .wav - made no difference. First too much music, now no music. Does this have something to do with clearing the proxy files??? Really frustrated. Mary Kay

Mary Kay,
Did you try deleting the song a second time? What is happening now should have nothing to do with the proxy files. Just out of curiosity, try a different audio file and see if that works. Have you clicked on the +/- icon which opens up a window for the tracks, be sure all the audio type tracks are checked. I think you need to get that deleted audio to disappear. Of course I don't know what all you have tried since you wrote this post. Sometimes just closing the application and then opening it back up again will set things straight. Let me know how your making out. :)
To see all the available tracks, switch to the Timeline and then click as indicated in the image.

OK, Patty, sit down, you aren't going to believe this. I had added one song, didn't like it, deleted. Then remembered about the Proxy file. Went and cleared it. It still appears in the box though. I tried to right click, but "delete" was in gray. Highlighted it, hit delete - nothing. Decided to go on. Put in a new song - in music and special effects tracks (which I have showing) - nothing. BUT, as I was watching the production with music showing in the track, but very silent, I noticed my transitions were all just fading out. The right transition was showing in the box, but the same "fading out" was playing over and over. This is not a large production by any means, and not alot of "extras" added in. All the transitions had been working perfectly before I started all this with the proxy files, music, etc. It was late, I was frustrated, so I decided to shut the computer off for the night - as I did that, I noticed my computer had no sound what so ever. After dreaming about it last night (I know you have all been there ), I got up and turned the computer on, pulled up the production and guess what - computer has sound, production has the one song in it, and better yet, transitions are working fine. Someone, somehow, somewhere came here during the night and with a tweek of their nose, fixed it.

Now I am feeling much better, and will try adding and editing a couple more songs. Any idea what I did to make those transitions go haywire. Does the tools/options - hardware or software have anything to do with this. I believe I switched from hardware to software when I was messing around with proxy. Also, when you say "delete" proxy files, do you mean to just hit the clear button. I couldn't seem to delete it. Thanks, so much. Mary Kay

Before I insert the second song, I play the production, and the song I have clipped ends where I want it to- only when I insert the second, does it repeat. Are we confused yet? What am I doing wrong?? Thanks MK

I've run across this, and/or similar glitchs, multiple times. Each time i use the "undo" function to reverse whatever edit i've just done (whether deleting end of song or tacking on new song to end, or splitting song prior to end deletion). Then I randomly highlight either other song clips or jump to highlight scenes. Anything to get the system focused elsewhere (perhaps clearing scarfed memory buffers). then re highlight song, trim and delete end. seems to work. just a pain in the a__.

Mary Kay,

If you changed from hardware to software, that would affect the transitions. You can't use 3D transitions in software mode. When you are talking about deleting the proxy files I am meaning through the Roxio program, in videowave go into tools and click options then click the second tab and there you will see the delete proxy files button. Is that what you did. There is not clear button, that sounds like you went into windows tool file. Maybe you could explain exactly what you did and where you did it. Switch back to hardware to get the transitions to work for all of them. :)

Thank you for the info on "hardware/software". Had no idea. When I tried to delet Proxy files I was in videowave, clicked tools/ options. I get a screen that says "application setting" (hardware/software), then Captured Narration - that's where I see the "clear" button. There are no "tabs" on the applicatin setting screen. Where dO I need to be???

I found out that when I put every other song in Music track, then special effects track, the music works much better - BUT, that is only if I do not do any editing. I wanted to end a song a bit early, so I clipped, then deleted the ending. This time, when I went back to play the song, there was no sound from that one song. Editing any music screws it up. Whenever I edit a song, the sound is gone. I have to save/exit out of videowave/ then reload everything. Then the editing takes effect. I know this is a solution, but I feel this program should work better than that. I should be able to add all my music in the music track without all these problems. Seems Roxio needs to fix things a bit. I guess I am a person who thinks it should work right the first time, shouldn't have to "work around " these problems. Possibly when I figure out how to delete proxy files, that will help. Do I need to be in a different area? Do I delete the whole file folder or just contents? Thanks so much for all you help and patience with me. Mary Kay

That is the correct place and button for version 8 to clear out the proxy files. The tabs and button labeled 'Delete Files' was what it was called in version 7.x

Sorry about that Mary Kay, I was answering you from a computer that has v7 rather then v8. I am not sure why you are having the problem with editing. I can tell you another way to shorten the audio, not a workaround, just another way to do it. You can highlight the audio, place your cursor over the end of the audio and you will see a two sided arrow, just drag it back to where you want the audio to stop. Maybe someone else has an idea what is going on with what you are doing in the editing window. :)

Here is another post with the same answer plus picture.

Quote

1. I am editing video files and will burn on DVDs. I need to add music as background. When I add first music track, it was okay. After adding the second one, I can hear the music sound when I play the first track. This happened because I trimmed a few seconds of the first track. Do you know why it cannot take the trim? 2. I need to combine two music tracks when doing the video editing. It doesn't allow my to mix the ending of the first track and the beginning of the second track like Windows Movie Maker and Pinnacle. Is there any way to do it?
3. Why sometimes when I preview, the audio sound lost in some of clips?

Do all editing of videos in VideoWave. Do the audio addition in the timeline view with two or more audio tracks. To mix, just drag the beginning of the second track to the end of the first track. As for the rest of your issues, they may go away if you do the above. But just to be sure, clear the proxy files by going to tools/options/. What Roxio program do you have?
