You say "another session of Roxio DirectCD Kernel is running" - what Roxio Version do you have? DirectCD is part of the older Version 4 and 5.
What Operating System do you have?
And what kind of files are you trying to record, and how are you trying to do it? For example, we don't know if you are trying to use WinXP's built-in burning, or if you have Nero's InCD running, or have two different Versions of Roxio software with the Packet-Writing program for both installed.
(Altho the quick answer is to uninstall ALL Packet-Writing programs, they aren't good for much other than permantly LOSING all information.)

The mere fact that it mentions Direct CD warrants moving the thread so I don't have to read it.

Try starting ECDC without any CD in your CD Writer drive. If that works, then the problem is that you had a disc formatted for use with Direct CD in the drive, and Direct CD had control of the drive. Once you get ECDC started, insert a fresh, blank, not formatted disc into the drive. You only format discs for use with Direct CD. To make a "standard" CD with ECDC, you start with an unformatted, blank disc.
Hope that helps!

I had two different version, I think, plus a formatted disk. All running at the same time. I have DirectCD v5

I had two versions plus a formatted disk ALL running at the same time. I have figured out my problem, I hope.

If the idea is to KEEP your data long term, NEVER format the disc.
Use a sessions-based program, such as DataProject, and a blank disc..
A formatted disc is NOT a "great-big floppy-disc". My software guru warned me, but I thought she was wrong, so I learned the hard way.
