I am a brand new user to EMC8 and can't wait to get started on some new projects. I'm a total novice when it comes to computers, I just know that I like to experiment with video editing. I had some problems installing the software, and I think it boils down to my video card. When I am in VideoWave all of the "Add Content" menu options are grayed out. Additionally, I am not able to preview any of the pics and videos that I add - if I double click on them they will pop up in a new window, but I cannot preview them with transitions and audio. I can hear the audio playing, but the preview window remains black.

I have received a couple of different errors while in VideoWave (listed below)

.\IPEBase.cpp(2229):*** Error 80004005 = RightButtonUp(hWind, wParam, IParam)

and

Mixer is NULL

I have ran the hotfixes for both the 80004005 and Mixer is Null errors that were in other posts, but am still having these issues.

Another thing that I have noticed is that when I add pictures a dialog box will pop up that says "number of panels in production is 0" Does this mean it is not recognizing the pics that I have added?

Sorry to throw so many issues into one post - thanks in advance for any advice you can give. I would have taken the traditional tech support route, however since I cannot seem to get my registration email to come through I have not been able to log into tech support. (I had to create a new user with no product key attached to it)

The first thing to try is to see if there is a video chip driver update on the HP site.  HP Pavilion 061 doesn't provide enough information for me to see if there are new drivers. Next is to make sure that you have the latest Microsoft DirectX 9c. An third, make sure that in VideoWave>Tools>Options that the rendering is set to software.
Post back with your results.
I'm guessing that you don't have a video card; just chips.  If you've done the above and still can't get it to work, and if it is not a laptop, you may want to install a video card (easy).
Please post the complete model number of your computer.
Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.

My full model is HP Pavillion a656x (System Model PC199A-ABA-a656x) We purchased it in Aug 2004 and have made virtually no modifications to it since then. I checked the HP site for driver updates, and the newest update for the video card/chip (note sure which I have) was 12-2004. I downloaded it,  but am guessing that it still isn't going to do the trick.

My sense is that you are correct, and I'll need to purchase a video card. It is a desktop PC, so hopefully the installation will be easy as you have mentioned :)

I'll post an update once I am able to get the video card in.

Thanks for your help!

If you do decide to buy a card, stick with one of the majors - ATI now part of AMD makes the chips and the cards.  NVidia makes chips that other put on their card.  For instance my card is mad by eVGA but has the NVidia chips on it.  Don't spend much more than $100 on a card unless you are going to get into gaming.  Buy one with 256 Mb memory on board.  Some computers will automatically disable the on board chips; in other cases, you have to disable them yourself.  HP will help you with this.

I took a quick look at the HP support site for that model. If you aren't comfortable doing some of the updates, find a friend that can help.  There are tons of important ones like a motherboard BIOS update and firmware update for the DVD burner and CD ROM.

You do have an empty AGP 8X slot.  If you are considering a video card upgrade, that is what you will need.

Also your motherboard has the VIA chipset.  Get their latest chipset drivers at Via Arena.

:)

Thanks for all the advice! I am happy to report that after the installation of a new video card this weekend, VideoWave is running beautifully. I was able to complete my first production and am in love with the program! I took the advice of going with a less expensive card, since we do not do any gaming, and have had no issues. I was even able to install the card myself! I apologize that I do not have the name of the card handy to post, but I can tell you it was a lower end Nvidia card around $70 at Best Buy.

Thanks again! The help was VERY much appreciated.

To get the name of the video card:
-right click "my Computer"
-then click Hardware
-then Device Manager
-finally click Display Adapters

Another way is to
-click on the Start button on the TaskBar
-select run and type dxdiag in the input box.
the dxdiag utility will analyze your system and give you all sorts of information on video, audio, etc.

Fantastic !  Be careful, the product and coming to these boards are addictive,  Hope you have lots of spare time.
