I have MC8 , atholon2400, 1 gig ram ginormus video card,16x dual dvd burner usb2.0
When I try to burn a dvd ,with or without a menu it takes hours to encode.
My video source is my hard drive,

Encoding is CPU intensive. If you have a processor less than 3.0 GHz, then it is going to take forever to encode a long production. Even at 3.0 GHz, mine takes a long time. That is normal.

Encoding a slide show with 400+ photo's (1 hour program) and some low resolution video took about 4 hours with an Athlon XP 3000+ processor (2.1gz). If you capture as an mpeg using the roxio capture (for videos only) the encoding time really gets cut down. I suppose because its encoded as an mpeg which doesn't have to be re-encoded when burned. The quality of the finished product I've seen when doing it this is way exceeds the quality from version 7 in my experience. The video captured from a Sony minidv trv19 using roxio and burned using mydvd came out very bright and clear. In version 7 the quality was good but somewhat dull. I wonder if there is something similar to "Video Soap" that is applied to make things look sharper in emc8.

If that AVI is in DivX format, it will have to be completely re-encoded to the MPEG2 format for a DVD. I have a system similiar to jimbo's. I use only DV AVI and 'average' render is about 3X to 4X the length of the video. So 3 to 4 hour rendering time for a 1 hour video is average on MY machine. Your results may be longer or shorter depending on your CPU, etc.
