Burn Image To Disk?
#1
Posted 15 January 2006 - 12:17 PM
No problem saving an image to hard drive but when I try to burn it to a DVD-R the software assesses the disk capacity as only 650mb (if I use the Disk information tool it correctly measures it at 4.4gb). The consequence of this is that it won't burn an image. I'm also having trouble simply copying the folder across using Drag to Disc - everything slows down and eventually it gives an error message (sorry didn't make a note) and renders the disk unusable - says it is full but shows 0 bytes.
NEC feature Nero in their literature but I've happily been using Roxio for CDs up til now and an upgrade seemed the favoured option. Surely Roxio can cope with the drive?
PS I've tried uninstalling/ reinstalling to no avail

First make sure you have the latest firmware for the NEC and also make sure there is no other packet writing program installed on your system other than Drag to Disc.

Thanks for promt reply.
Had already checked for firmware update. It's a newly released device only a month old. I bought it because it had DVD RAM capability. Could both these aspects have an influence? Is Roxio not yet compliant?
No other writing program installed.

Use a different brand/type of media. It is looking like your burner doesn't like the type that you are using. And don't use Drag to Disc.

In response to last two posts:
I've tried two types of disc, TDK and Imation. Tried sourcing the image file from two different drives - one internal but separate to the drive that the application sits on, and one external connected USB/Firewire.
Burner is NEC ND-4551 internal drive
Computer specs:
AMD Athlon XP 1.73
1.5 Gb RAM
Gigabyte GA-7VAXP motherboard
nvidia GeForce 6600GT with 128mb
C: IBM-DJNA 22Gb
D: IBM-DJNA 18Gb
Western Digital external hard drive 160 Gb
Samsung CD/DVD ROM
Windows XP home + SP2
Have just noticed that as a consequence of recently loading video capture/editing software + Roxio, my C drive is now close to capacity - less than 1Gb free. Could be root of my problem? I'll try to free up space later today or tomorrow and see what happens.

Only 1 GB free on the C: drive? No wonder you are having problems!
Larger internal drives would certainly be in order especially if you are trying to do any video work. The external drive is fine for temp space and storing video source files but EMC still requires lots of space for intermediate/temp files on the C: drive.

Back after a short upgrading break and still experiencing problems!
My old hard drives have been replaced with two new 80Gb Maxtors and EC8 installed from scratch. I get the same capacity estimate of only 500-600mb for a blank DVD in the Burn Image to Disc application that I had before upgrading the HDDs. Have tried different makes and format (DVD-R, DVD RAM) of brand new DVDs to the same effect. If I check capacity elsewhere in Roxio it reports the full DVD capacity. Appears to be a difficulty in the BItD function.
If I attempt to burn regardless, the disc ejects and I get a request to insert a blank disc.
I haven't tried other functions but it is the BItD that I really need at the moment.
Any thoughts would be helpful.
Thanks

Your DVD iso image is what? Is it a DVD video? Can you mount the ISO image?

[You'll have to forgive my technical ignorance] The image is a from a DVD RAM disc containing a recording of a satellite programme made on a DVD recorder (I guess DVD video?). I haven't tried mounting the image as I don't have a virtual emulator installed.
The first projects I want to attempt are taking rudimentry edits of DVD RAM recordings made using the recorder and then copying them to DVD-Rs so that I can view them on any player. The NEC burner seemed a good solution, allowing me to copy an image file from DVD RAM to hard disk and then burn back to a DVD-R using the same burner.
I'm currently experimenting with burning a 'gi' file to disk which it seems to accept and is in progress (although I don't yet know the outcome). However, the capacity indicator showed 0kb free on the Disk prior to the burn!
In every case, the disc information has correctly analysed the disk and its capacity.

No this is not a DVD game it is a recording from a satellite broadcast (see my last post).
Not sure what your objection is to the information I have given as I've tried to explain as clearly as possible. Sorry if hasn't been helpful to you, but I haven't been deliberately obtuse.
This is what am trying to do (I've added some more to the info previously posted to hopefully clarify):
Take DVD RAM recordings made using my DVD recorder (Panasonic) and then copying them to DVD-Rs using the NEC burner so that I can view them on any player. The NEC burner seemed a good solution, allowing me to copy an image file from DVD RAM to hard disk and then burn back to a DVD-R using the same burner.
Having experimented since I was last on, I have found the following:
1. The gi file writes to a DVD-R (though with an apparently inaccuarate capacity indication as before) and can be read and played via the NEC and my DVD ROM drive. However, it is not recognised by my Panasonic DVD recorder or by my Sony DVD player. Both are DVD-R compliant.
2. I have found the 'Disc Image Loader' utility in EMC8 and the iso image I created earlier mounts and plays successfully.

Try Dan's suggestion about asking at cdfreaks.com.
Our problem is that on a DVD Movie there is absolutely no file that ends in "gi". In fact that extension does not show up on and file extension search sites…
I suspect we are dealing with a proprietary format and it is not something that can be copied in its' current state.
Post back with your results, you have our curiosity aroused...
