My wife purchased EMC8 Suite (not the deluxe which I am now ticked about....but not quite so ticked now that EMC9 has come out since I'll be upgrading to that eventually) when she purchased her new VAIO laptop about 6 months ago.  I didn't even know she had it until I went to start learning about digital editing after we returned from Alaska with 800+ pictures and several hours of video.

So, instead of buying another program, I dug into this one.  My first step?  Finding this place.  I started out on page 52 of the DVD and Video board and slowly started working my way back.  I didn't read all the threads (since SO many are repeats....don't any newbies know about the SEARCH function????? :) ) and only hit the topics that seemed interesting or directly addressed an issue I was having or had read about in the manual.  However, this process still took many hours.  I have just made it back up to the most recent threads and wanted to give a HUGE THANK YOU to the digital gurus who answer, usually so graciously, the questions of all the newbies!

I'm sure I'm forgetting one or two and for that I apologize....but I wanted to acknowledge some people who selflessly assist those of us who need so much!  You guys (and gals) helped me learn so much with your answers to all the questions.  You guys ROCK!  It got where I could anticipate what you were going to say before you said it.  Although it wasn't usually too hard....."give system specs"....."run video test"......"update drivers for your video card,"  etc.

I'm sure I'll have tons of questions as I continue to learn.  Haven't run into all the error codes, etc.  We've got EMC8 running on my wife's laptop which, I have learned is not ideal.  It meets the system minimums but it is slow going at times.  Our desktop is 3 years old and will just not hack the riggors of this program.  We are going to buy a new desktop soon.  I will be ensuring that it greatly exceeds system minimums so I can upgrade to EMC9 and work easily.

Again THANKS!

...and to all the newbies.....READ THE BOARD AND RUN A SEARCH ON YOUR QUESTION BEFORE POSTING!  I have had a ton of questions and have had all my questions to date answered BEFORE my first post!

Appreciate the kudos but you are correct.  A little searching and your questions can usually be answered.  Also, many go right past the sticky notes at the top of some of the boards with some of the more useful fixes.

Thank you for the kind words. We're here to help.  Your last statement is very good advise for those new to the forum.  As you have discovered, software is now getting more demanding on the hardware.

What a nice post. Your thanks means a lot to all those that frequent these boards day after day and help others with their problems. Searching is certainly one good way of finding the answer to one's problems. Positive posts like yours do a lot more for others than you think :) Have fun with all your videos and photos from your Alaskan vacation. With that many, you certainly have your work cut out for you. However, I'm sure you will end up with some great DVD's.

See....I knew I would forget a few.  Patty and Frank, the advice given by both of you has helped.  So, since I forgot to include you on my THANKS list....here you go!

THANKS!

My project is proceeding slowly.  This stuff is SO FLIPPIN' TIME CONSUMING!!!!  I sit down to work on it and and an hour disappears like it never happened.  I also have to fight to find time to fit it in.  However, I am having fun.  No major areas of frustration yet (but that seems to always be right around the corner  :) ).

Anyways.....keep the great advice comin'.  There are plenty of us out here who need it!

Maybe if you had 3 photos, no videos and did nothing but dissolve transitions....you just MIGHT fit a project into the time it takes to write grandma.  However, there is the burning time......which would take about an hour.....

With the time I have already put into my first project, I could have driven out to see my grandmother and driven back! :)

It shouldn't be that hard!

Slow and inefficient encoders eating maximum band width. Maximizing processor use to 100%. A laptop with onboard video was never designed to use this software.

Question how do you cool it grinding away 6 to 12 hours rendering video? Even a good and adequately cooled desk top could have problems.

Doing video on the operating system hard drive is another problem! A dedicated HD for video is a must . Encoding 4 to 8gb of video to a operating system HD will defrag it to illegal blue screen lockup state.

The minimum system requirements are a joke IMO and should be doubled for video work!

Why, I'm more than doubled and it is still taxing on my system! Download MBM Mother Board Monitor and see the beating your processor and MB, takes doing video work.

"I could have driven out to see my grandmother and driven back."  My Grandmother who is now passed, would of appreciated  that more, she was born in 1900!

One of the videos I took (DV, 1 hour in length), took about 2.5 hours to burn to DVD unedited.  I haven't tried rendering any photo/video combination yet.  Luckily, the video I am using in the production has been edited severly.  Of the 1 hour video, I think I am using 13-15 minutes....the rest will be photos.  However, you are right.  It is slow going.  I can't wait to get the new desktop we will be purchasing in the next few months.....if that doesn't happen, I might rip my hair out! :)

Actually, 2.5X the length of the video isn't bad at all.   On my last computer, it was more like 3 to 4X the movie length. Even on this newer Dual Core, it's still about 1.5X.

Intel just came out with new Core2 processors and you may want to wait and see what AMD does in response.

Good suggestion Gary,

Here's the link on the Intel Core 2 Duo ( C2D )

Delivering the best overall performance. Period.
With Intel Core 2 Duo processors powering your desktop and laptop PCs you'll get the latest arsenal of performance-rich technologies, including up to 4MB of shared L2 cache, up to 1066 MHz Front Side Bus for desktop, and up to 667 MHz Front Side Bus for laptop, you've got the future of computing now, and only from Intel:

Intel

The bottom line: Intel's Core 2 Duo E6700 offers the best price-to-performance ratio we've seen in a desktop chip. For half the cost of AMD's top-of-the-line chip, you get identical if not superior performance and better power efficiency. AMD surprised us last year with its completely dominant dual-core chips, but Intel regains the crown with Core 2 Duo.

Cnet review

The quad core is coming!

I don't buy the Intel hype.  Core 2 just isn't worth it.

For HALF the price of AMD?
ecost.com
Core™2 Duo Processor EX6800 (2.93GHZ)- LGA775
Price : $1,284.69

tigerdirect.com

AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 2.80GHz / 2MB Cache / 2000MHz FSB / Socket AM2 / Dual-Core (Windsor) / Processor with Fan
Price:    $869.99

Half price for the Intel?   These are the prices listed right now for teh FASTEST CPU for each.  Looking at Tom's Hardware, the AMD FX-62 is just a few seconds off each of the tests.

Core 2 is more hype than anything.  I really wish I had waited for the AMD 5000+.

Maximum PC just posted it's Head2Head on the Intel Core 2 Extreme vs AMD 64 FX-62 and it's test show the Intel beating out the AMD. Intel won the benchmarks but they gave AMD the winner of the motherboard support and a tie with features.  The rest they gave to Intel.

I've never owned an AMD with the exception of a very old P1 many years back and have done well with Intel.  They both have their pluses and minuses. I use CorelDraw for designing and art at work and my competitors across the country have tried AMD and with Corel 11, 12 and X3, they all agree Intel works better with Corel.  As I also do some work at home, that's why I have kept to AMD.  I've been tempted lately by the price wars to purchase an AMD system and most likely will one day.  Competition's a great benefit to both users.

Cnet said half the price. Since C2D's were released AMD has dropped there prices.

Wasn't that AMD cpu $1,450.00 a couple of months ago?

I would start shopping at newegg compared to ecost.com prices!

Even if the FX62 was $1450 a few months ago, the Intel X6800 was more then, too.  Someone at CNET has strange new math or simple don't know how to count.
