I had roxio easy media creator 8 but just upgraded to version 9. Both have the same problem. I have a double layer dvd burner in my pc and have created a movie I made recently on vacation, including some slides. The dvd folder will play just fine using any dvd player. When I use the dvd copy function and select my folder as the source and dvd-r double layer as the destination it tells me that the size is 7.81 GB and shows green on the bottom meaning it will fit on the 8.5GB DL dvd-r. When I burn it it starts out with 'compressing disk' and completes the action with no errors. It also tells me in the bottom of the window that I will end up with a disk with 'original quality'. The resulting dvd however is only 3.6 GB and is obviously not the quality I started out with. I realize that I can simply put the video ts file directly on the dvd by other means, but why does EMC insist on compressing my video and ruining a double layer dvd. I could have used a single layer one if I wanted it to compress. It seems that even though it knows I have a DL dvd it wants to fit it on single layer media. How do I turn off this stupid function? The resulting disk plays just fine, albeit not in the quality I desire.

Which application are you using? Are you copying disc to disc using teh HOME copy function or are you using Disc Copier?

If you are using Disc Copier, insert the DL disc and look at the Destination. Does Disc Copier correctly recognize that the disc is indeed DL? This is a function of the drive. Make sure you have the latest firmware to recognize DL -R media.

I am using the disk copy function from the home page, and selecting 'copy dvd'. I then choose my source and destination. I have 3 double layer dvd burners in my pc, and all do the same thing (one is an hp640, one a pioneer dvr-111d, and the 3rd a tsst corp. shw163a). All have the latest firmware. The first two are pata(ide) drives, and the 3rd is sata. They all recognize the dvd as double layer, and all display the green line at the bottom that does not go all the way to the end, indicating enough room to fit on the dvd. Even if I try to create a disk image file it compresses it to 3.6gb from 7.8 gb, and any attempt to burn to the dl dvd results in a total dvd size of 3.6gb. I have created an iso file and burned it to disk in the full 7.8gb size, and it works. I just can't figure out why the dvd copy function insists on compression when there is plenty of space.

I should perhaps have been more specific. From the 'home' screen I am selecting the copy function, and then in that list I selected 'copy dvd movies'. This seems to be identical to selecting disc copier from programs in the start menu.

It shouldn't make any difference because you're not using this but just for grins try going to the Video Compilation tab and at the bottom changing the disc size to DL.Maybe for some strange reason this is affecting it.This is a bigtime shot in the dark.

Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately it does not help.

Chet: What is the total length (time!) of the movie you want to copy?

What menu structure?

I want to duplicate your project and see if I get the same results…

I hope I can explain what is going on. I have a video I created in Makarska, Croatia that is 78:43, and slides from the same of length 25:21. A second video from Poland is 16+11 and the slides 3+02. These are contained in a dvd folder which contains audio_ts (empty) and video_ts (7.78 GB). If I go to disk copier and select the cd & dvd copy tab and add the dvd folder as the source, the line on the bottom shows a max size of 8147 MB and the line is 98mm long on my monitor. The green portion is 85mm long which mathematically works out to 7066 MB. If I burn a DL disk, it compresses and the disk comes out at 3.24 GB. If I create an iso file, it also is 3.24 GB in size.

Now, if I go to the Video compilation tab other things happen. My four separated movies show up to add to the compilation. The strange thing is that as you add movies one by one the green line shows only the length of the last movie added, not the total as one would expect. The last movie added in my case is the 3 minute one, and the green line is now 2mm long even though all 4 units are showing in the compilation window. I would think logically it would show the total, but it does not - at least not when adding units from a dvd video_ts folder. I have not tried adding movies from other sources as I do not presently have any. Now, if I burn a dvd it works, and is the proper 7+ GB size, but of course I lose the menus that were originally created (this is referenced in the help quide). I can also create an iso file and it too is 7+ GB in length. I would of course prefer to use the cd dvd copy function to preserve my created menus but can't get rid of the programs forced use of the compression sequence. I can put my video_ts directly to a dvd and it works but I would like to be able to use the Roxio program I purchased, which is supposed to do this. Thank you for your offer to look into this.

We have just become aware of this issue but we do not have a work around for it at this time. It has now been reported to our developers.

Cannot save an .iso disc image of a DVD-R DL over 3.5 GB using Roxio Home

Issue Using the Data Disc application (Home --> Copy --> Save Image) in Easy Media Creator 9, an .iso disc image from a DVD-R Dual Layer disc over 3.5 GB in size cannot be created. The media is ejected without an error message.

If you then attempt to use the disc drive with another application, an error stating that the "drive is in use" may occur. Follow the steps below to resolve this issue. Resolution To free up the drive, follow these steps:
  • With the Save Image application still open, remove the DVD from the drive.
  • Click the Burn button.
  • When prompted to insert a blank disc, click Cancel.
To create a disc image file over 3.5 GB from your DVD-R Dual Layer Disc, use the DVD Global-Image (.gi) format instead. This is available by doing the following:
  • When all your files have been added in Data Disc, choose Browse... under the Destination Selection window.
  • In the Select the destination drive of folder window, choose DVD Global-Image (*.gi) from the Save as type: drop-down menu .
  • Click Save.
  • Click the Burn button to save your disc image.
NOTE: If you have Creator Classic or Disc Copier installed, you could also use either of those applications to create a disc image file.

I know I can create an iso image, and did so by other means. However, you also cannot create a dl disk using the dvd copy function as it too will not be over 3.5 GB. The previous version (8) has similar problems that never were fixed. It is nice to be a beta tester.

Since it's the "Home" copy that isn't working right for you, have you (or why haven't you) tried using the Disc Copier application included in both v8 & v9 instead, which should work, and is more robust?

So, what's the big deal? You can use Disc Copier and you already know that and now you know that Roxio has a work around for the problem and is aware that it exists. Move on.

I would be frustrated if there had been no alternative or workaround. But both exist.

It is the disk copier function that is not working!! The workaround then seems to be to create an iso file using another means and then burn it to the dl disk? I guess another 'workaround' would be to use nero. You cannot create a dvd dl disk from a video_ts file directly to the dl disk using roxio.

Just to clarify, as a reference, look at the screen shots in this post. Is the program area you are trying to do this in look like screen A or screen B? Or have you tried working with both?

Chet: matatekid found a workaround that is usable and painless. Use that until such time that Roxio can come up with a solution for DC. Roxio did acknowledge that large ISO files do not work correctly with DC and they are working on it.

There are a lot of programs within the Suite but we get a little lazy and continue to work with the ones we already know.

I already have a video_ts file on my hard drive created from Adobe Premiere. It is screen 'A' that will not put this file on a dl dvd without compressing it from 7.8 gb down to 3.5 gb. The solution from above is the solution I had already figured out, as I stated that I could create an iso file by different means and get it onto the dl dvd. I can also get the video_ts file to burn directly by other methods. What I cannot do is 'copy dvd movies'. I have to go through an extra conversion step to create an iso file when it should burn directly to the dl disk from the video_ts file. The funny thing is that version 8 does the same thing - so why is this problem just now becoming known to Roxio. Now we have version 9 and 8 still has bugs.

I wonder if this is a DL problem. I always burn my family video to video folders for testing and then use Disc Copier to burn the folder to disc. Has always worked for me. DL media is still too expensive for me so I've never tried burning DL blank disc.

You state that you burn the file to a video folder first. Do you mean to a dvd folder containing video_ts and audio_ts folders? I would assume this is what you mean as you can test it with windvd etc. to see if it plays corectly. Then do you burn this folder to your dvd directly or do you create an iso file first? If you are using normal single layer dvd's you will not have the problem that I am experiencing. The DL disk is the problem as disk copier will simply not burn correctly to it. Even though the program knows you have dl disk it attempts to compress the folder as if it had only a single layer disk to work with. I can successfully create a single layer dvd with no problems using disk copier.
