The most obvious effect was on ZoneLabs ZoneAlarm Security Suite (again fully up to date). It was regularly reporting that the application was trying to update itself. And my email client, Outlook 2000 froze too.
I used MSCONFIG to disable RoxWatchTray but this did not seem to improve the situation. Any suggestions, please?
If I have posted this in the wrong place I apologise and would appreciate someone pointing me to the right place

Disable ZA, and see what happens.

Dear GrandPaBruce
With respect my ZA was working fine, has been doing so for about a year, through at least two upgrades and was protecting me from all the 'nasties' on the 'net before I started to load EMC 8. If I disable ZA all that *might* prove is that there is incompatibility between the two programs, whilst exposing my internet connection to the 'baddies'. That incompatibility is what I already suspect.
Is there a point to your suggestion that I am missing?

Yes, there is a point! Try it, to see if that is the problem, and then you should be able to find some setting in ZA to allow EMC 8 to work.

Oh dear. What a shame. I thought I had made it clear that I already thought that the problem lay between the two programs, so your suggestion would not have taken me a lot further.
"You should be able to find some setting in ZA to allow EMC 8 to work". What had you in mind? A set of radio buttons for changing acceptability of various programs? Now if you had asked me if there was a setting within ZA to tweak I could have said that I had checked that already, because I have done so.
What about your own area of expertise - EMC? Is there a setting in that for making it work with ZA?
I have had a constructive response from ZA tech support. They say they know of no incompatibilities between the two but suggest a clean re-install of ZA, "just in case". So that is what I'll try even though it is somewhat galling that ZA is working fine until EMC crashes it.
Thanks for responding

I'll make this as clear as possible. I don't have ZA, and it is doubtful that I will ever have ZA. As far as you suspecting something, if you are so paranoid that you won't disable ZA to find out, then uninstall EMC 8, and forget about it.
