I am coming to this board to ask some questions.  I consider myself a very new beginner and am looking for some new editing software.  In searching the comparisons of different programs I realized I really don't know some of the basics.

As some of you know, I have been having problems making my "movies" ever since my DH gave me a new Sony Handycam, DCR-DVD403 NTSC camera.

Now on to some questions...just exactly what is my format?  Is it .avi?  What is DivX?  What is the difference between  MPEG-1, MPEG-2, DV-AVI, DivX ?

Some of the problems I am having are sound sync and using the widescreen format.  I use a lot of transitions, background music and titles.  I am looking at Power Director and Ulead Video Studio.  Both of these programs have a video stabalizer (did I mention I am a beginner?) which sounds great!  Ulead has a green screen editin feature that sounds fun.

Any thoughts?  I value your "professional" opinions.
Not that any of this makes any sense to me, but if it helps...my system:

Wow!  Thanks Walt...I think I'll start with the Glossary, maybe then I will be able to understand the site better.  Actually, just looking up DivX in the Glossary I found out that DivX is just another format for MPEG-2's...that helps.

So much too learn and I want to know it all now.

Now I am really confused...I just found this description of DivX on another site:

DivX CD
DivX is a new video format based on MPEG-4 compression standard for video. DivX movies offer better compression and higher quality video than regular MPEG movies and take less time to encode. With DivX, you can compress a full-length movie small enough to fit onto a single CD (700MB).

Most people Pam, want to view there video work ( not all ) on a stand alone DVD player over there TV. For that it has to be encoded into DVD compliant Audio_ts and Video_ts folders to burn to a DVD. Keep that in mind as you do your research!

So does that mean I want a program that makes a DVD out of MPEG's?  Ton confusing part for me is I had this all down with my simple Kodak Easyshare videos.  It is when I made the upgrade to the widescreen MiniDVD's that my problems came up.  I was somewhat of an expert with my little slideshows and small video clips.

Aren't they in a DVD structure (Audio_ts and Video_ts folders) ?

I would think so, unfortunatly I don't know...I can make movies, I just don't understand the tech side of it.  All I do know is the little Mini DVD's can play in my DVD player after I finalize them.  When I put them in my DVD player they play in 16:9 with surround sound.  When I import them into EMC8 they are in 4:3

yEs Media Import 8 does have that problem when importing 16:9 MPEG. As a possible work around, copy the VOBs from teh miniDVD to a folder on your hard drive. Rename the extension to .MPG.  Create a 16:9 Videowave project and add one of the files.  That 'should' work.

One caveat: EMC 8 does not support surround sound.  Videowave/MyDVD supports AC3 2 channel stereo only.

I see no mention of it in EMC9 features either! Was that a typo?
