I don't know where this goes, because I don't see a forum for Roxio Creator Plus. (I have version Roxio Creator Plus - Dell Edition, Build: 2.4.32a) Roxio RecordNow Audio, Version: 2.0.4, Build: 204B28C, RCP
I want to burn at 4x or 8x and the software won't let me but the drive says it should be able to do that.. How do I fix this? Thanks.

There are no forums for Dell versions of the software. If you have Creator Classic with that version, use it instead of the Sonic software, which RecordNow is.
If it isn't holding your 4x selection, like you have shown in your upper screen, I have no clue what you need to do. Make sure that your firmware is up to date, but I am not sure that that will solve your problem.

I thought that the first screen was a Windows screen, but since I have no clue about basic software that comes on Dell computers, I did not say anything.
The fact that the OP didn't explain the screens did not help. At any rate, I would suggest asking Dell.

It's a Dell PC, but it's Roxio's software. (I did ask Dell, and they sent me another CD to install, but nothing changed. Also, I had version 6 or so of Sonic's RecordNow on my last PC (before Roxio bought them or before Sonic bought Roxio), and it worked correctly. Plus, I just happened to check Microsoft's Media Player, and it allows slower speeds too. It refers to the Recording tab on the Properties box of the drive itself ... like it's supposed to.)
I did upgrade the drive's firmware, E111 to E113, but nothing changed.
For some reason, the version of Roxio Creator Plus can't see what speeds it can burn at. I had really good luck with Sonic's RecordNow on my last PC, that's why I'm trying to get the Roxio version to work on my new one.

Why do you need to burn at a slower speed with a new burner? Have you tried burning at the higher speed? When it is burning, what speed does it actually burn at?
Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.

This by itself says that it is a Dell version of the software (I have version Roxio Creator Plus - Dell Edition, Build: 2.4.32a).Once the software is tweaked by a hardware manufacturer it becomes OEM software and hence their problem.
It doesn't suprise me that WMP can burn at the slower speeds. The first screen you show is a Windows drive properties screen and it shows the slower speeds.Something either with that drive or the Dell version of that software is not detecting the correct speeds.

... Something either with that drive or the Dell version of that software is not detecting the correct speeds.
Bingo. I don't think it's a drive problem because the slower speeds are shown in the Properties box. Hence, it's a software problem. I get the same story: because it's a "Dell edition", I should expect support from Dell but not Roxio. But who wrote it? Roxio, not Dell.
I might try and find an older version of Sonic's RecordNow. It did work on my old PC.
Added: found the install CD for Sonic's RecordNow 6.5. Installed it. It's doing the same thing. Max or 48x. So it's probably not the software, but maybe how the software is querying the drive for the speeds available. I will keep bugging Dell unless anyone else has an idea.
I want to burn at 4x or 8x because a slower speed burn usually improves readibility on the widest variety of readers. I've always done it, and have never had a problem with a disc being unreadable. And this includes car players, and a couple of boom boxes among lots of DVD players.

Yes,we have told you that but we don't work for Roxio. We're users just like you, trying to help other users.
Try going into Device Manager and deleting the drive.Once you do this reboot your machine. On reboot the drive will be redetected by Windows and hopefully the software.

From what you described, it's the drive's firmware that is the problem, as both programs offer speeds the drive returns when it's queried. It's not offering the other speeds for the media that's in it because the firmware is reporting it doesn't support them for the media that's in it. Either try another brand of media or let Dell know about the firmware problem you are having.

The first screen (drive properties recording tab) applies if one uses the native XP method of copying files to a CD R/RW disk (it doesn't recognise DVDs). I don't think it is relevant to setting the burning speed if some software (whether Roxio or other) is used instead.

I agree. But I keep thinking that if those slower speeds are available in the Properties box, they should be available to the software too. ?? And then if the Properties box speed would "override" what's in the software. (That's a simple test that I haven't tried yet.)
Not a question of media. I can check the speeds on my old PC and new PC without any disc in the drive. (Although one person said I should put a disc in there, and maybe the choices would change.)
I will try deleting the drive, and then see what happens when XP autodetects it and reloads the firmware. I am not hopeful that will do it though. I have seen a bunch of other's complain about this drive and this problem too.
I have come across sort of a bootleg version of firmware that I could try (I can always go back if it doesn't work), and one person mentioned checking (and possibly upgrading the ASPI layer). But I didn't have to mess with the ASPI layer at all on my last PC. (But 2 PC's ago, with Win Me, I did.)

I do appreciate the suggestions.
Shouldn't have to do amything related to the ASPI.
Those speeds that Windows shows for CD discs, has nothing to do with where this software gets that information from for CD or DVD disc's. Those would be used strictly by Windows. As mentioned earlier, Roxio's software "asks the drive" what it is capable of, by querying it's firmware, then offers those options to you. I don't know if it's part of that OEM version you have, but if you open up the Creator Classic app, see if there is a Tools -> Disc and Device Utility menu option. If there is that should show you the information your drive is reporting to the software.

I keep thinking that Windows and Roxio's software should both be asking the firmware at what speeds the drive can burn though.
I don't have the Creator Classic app, but I found a way to improve things. If I put a 24x CD-R in the drive, I now get down to 16x as a choice in the Roxio software. In the older Sonic RecordNow version, it now shows down to 40x. So I guess the newer rev is more compatible with the drive. I always liked to burn at 1/4 to 1/3 of the max speed. Maybe 2/3's will have to do.
