EMC8 What computer for HDV?
#1

I'm currently using EMC 8 with a 2.4Ghz P4 (Intel) with an Asus P4PE motherboard with 512M of Ram.
I would like to use the HDV functionality of MyDVD but my computer is not up to the task (too slow) and adding Ram doesn't help.
For those people out there who are able to use the HDV capture and editiing with EMC8............
I know what the specs are for Roxio EMC 8. I'm looking for models of motherboard & processor combos that work.
So.
What computer are you using to capture and edit HDV?
Motherboard - Brand & model?
Processor - This will be specific to the motherboard but again Brand & model?
Ram?
I would like to upgrade my motherboard/proccessor and not take any guesses.
Thanks much!

I don't have any advice on the MB/Processor for you, but thought I would mention that the video card is just as important to consider if you are looking to upgrade your hardware.

Actually, fairly simple. Buy the fastest CPU and best video card that you can afford. I wouldn't try editing HD video with anything less than dual core: AMD or Intel. Perferably, 3Ghz or better. 1gig RAM is the sweet spot for WinXP. Big hard drives for lots of video file storage and temp file space. 300-500gig SATA II. 10K RPM would be nice, but are still premium price.
Phenom X4 965 3.4Ghz, 4gig DDR3, LG 47" 3D TV, Hitachi 1TB HD, Seagate 500GB, LiteOn iHBS112 Bluray, TSSTCorp SH-222A DVD, ATI HD3300 IGP, VIA HiDef audio with Logitech Z5500 THX certified 5.1 speakers, Epson 4490 scanner, Canon 9000Pro MarkII printer, Sharp AL1551CS laser printer/copier, Sony TRV740 8mm digital, Canon HV20 HDV camcorder and Fuji S7000 for still photos, Win7 Home Premium

Using my existing pc I was able to capture HDV using Ulead Videostudio 10 plus and output it to DVD. The CPU usage ran about 63% during capture. Roxio EMC8 ran at 100% cpu usage during capture with skipped frames.
What is the big difference between the codecs?
I still would like to build a faster computer so I can use both software packages.

Instead of releasing a next generation optical disc camcorder, companies are wedging HD onto existing technology in order to provide consumers with HD optical discs ( mini DVD camcorder ) as soon as possible. Interestingly, this is the same strategy that is being used with HDV, the current tape-based HD consumer standard. HDV tapes squeeze a compressed HD signal onto MiniDV tapes.
I have played with this, with a Sony DVD505. I simply transfer it in disc copier to the HD and rename the main vob to mpg. The AVCHD format for 8 cm DVD camcorders will enable users to shoot HD footage in a MPEG4/H.264 codec at twice the efficiency of the current MPEG2 or MPEG4. The codec will be able to shoot 1080i or 720p with a 4:2:0 sampling format, and the MPEG4/H.264 will be able to shoot in both 4:3 and 16:9 formats. Audio recorded in the Dolby Digital (AC-3) codec will have the potential for 1 – 5.1 channel audio modes, whereas the Linear PCM audio codec will be able to output anywhere from 1 to 7.1 channels.
