:) Biggest lesson learned? Read a discussion forum like this one before ever buying a Roxio product again (which is highly unlikely). Now that I have read many of the threads here in this enlightening virtual discussion, I'm convinced that unless I want to go through even more major hoops then I already have,  and consistently use Task manager to try and end processes that used to end normally, I had better find an alternative product.
I'm now up to the point where Roxio and her crew suggest that I copy the Install CD to the hard drive and attempt to install, since it won't do that simple task reading the CD from the CD drive. I have installed, uninstalled, downloaded the Registry cleaner, deleted files, restored my system twice and now am restoring Sonic apps just to be able to use my combo DVD/CD drive as it was intended.
I have seen some sage advice here on this site and I can empathize with some of the users who really don't know where to turn next. All I want to do is install the EMC 8 Suite that I purchased on a CD, have it actually work without hanging my system, and actually be able to use my DVD drive to read and write on it independently of EMC projects.
If anyone out there has a system similar to my Dell Inspiron 9200 laptop that has successfully installed EMC 8 or higher and can instruct me in some how-to, I'm all ears (or should I say eyes?)

As for this forum teaching you something, that's great but keep in mind, most people only come here with problems and very few pop in just to say how great the product is.
As for your problem, I'm sure you've read that Dell products come with similar software installed.  It may be that what is already installed, is conflicting with EMC8.  Specifically, Sonic DLA and EMC's Drag to Disc which are packet writing programs that can't co-exist together.  Therefore, you should first fully remove the pre-installed Sonic software.
I don't have your laptop but I own many Dells between home and work and every single one of them I get, (or any other brand) I immediately wipe the drive clean and start fresh with my own junk.  I'm not advocating you do the same but I've found so much fewer problems in the long run getting the pre-installed stuff off.  For my personal usage, most of it I would never use.
After you uninstall the Sonic software, you should reboot and remove those folders.  Of course, you should have the original disc or back up should you want to return it to it's former state.
I could be wrong about what's on the new laptops so if you can list your programs, that would help.  I'm sure the hardware is more than up to snuff.

I appreciate your comments about the pre-installed Sonic software and that's why I did not question the EMC install indicating that it would need to uninstall the Sonic apps before completing the install of EMC. However, when EMC was finally installed and I began having DVD/CD problems I had no recourse for accessing any disc on that drive. I followed the specific instructions of Support personnel twice about removing all Sonic software, including dealing with Registry entries, but when I did all that and got to what I thought would be a clean install, and the process stopped and asked me to re-insert the EMC install CD, when it was already in the drive, then I believed I was going to get off this train of frustration. Support's answer to the CD being called when it was in the drive was "copy the CD contents to the HD" and install that way. That is unacceptable to me since I completely installed the first time from the CD (minus the Content CD which would never even read) and actually began using the software before I began having system crash problems.

I recognize I have not supplied my system specs, and I also recognize how hardware, drivers, etc. can specifically affect other software loads, this has become a mountain I'm not sure I want to continue to attempt to climb. This seems to be a very useful forum filled with helpful remarks and suggestions, but the average system user does not have the inclination nor should they have the desire to get as technical as messing around with the Registry. The Sonic MyDVD 5, Record Now 7, and Sonic DLA are the only such products on my system that can write DVD/CDs I believe. I thought that all of these were removed by EMC8 during install, so removing them before hand could have an effect, but I'd need for somebody more expert, like you to tell me that.

At some point along this path, I almost want to ask, what alternative products are out there besides Roxio EMC?
