I have installed the update, uninstalled the whole programme and reinstalled both again to no effect.
Apologies if this query has surfaced in the past but I couldn't see it on the posts I checked out.

1) Launch Media Import
2) Click on TOOLS --> OPTIONS
3) Click on 'Twain Options'
4) Try switching to Memory and/or File modes listed here to see if this helps.
If not, I'd suggest reinstalling the scanner driver as provided to see if that helps us pick up the scanner.

I am grateful for your speedy response to my query. I had tried changing the Twain Options previously but gave it another shot. It did not work so I removed the Canon driver and reinstalled it.
The problem still exists... the Import Now button does not activate the scanner - even though the scanner offers Media 8 as an option as does Media 8 offer the scanner as an importing option.
I feel there must be a missing link in the Media 8 software. I would uninstall and reinstall the Suite if you thought it would help.
MGI Photosuite 4 will have to be reinstalled and come to my rescue as Roxio support have been silent for 10 days on this issue and I need to work on a project urgently.
Thanks for trying to help.

I tried to find that model on the Canon site but couldn't. Is it from outside the US? There are several drivers and updates at that site but they are not dated so I don't know if they would help.

Try Reinstall your EMC 8 Product. I can confirm that the button works, because I was just scanning some photos using my Hp 2410xi All in one printer.
If it doesn't work, it might be a compatability issue or your drivers just might need to be updated just like sknis said.

I have no idea what you are trying to import from the scanner, but if it is a picture, just use the software that came with the scanner, and scan the picture to your hard drive as a .jpg or .bmp, and go from there.

I contacted Canon who responded in under two days. (Roxio must be a lot busier). There is no driver update for my scanner and, although they said "it is working with other software so it should work with Media 8". I uninstalled the scanner and reinstalled just in case.
It would appear that I must delete Media 8 and give it another try. As far as using other software is concerned... my old photosuite platinum4 was a limited but well loved and reliable tool - it took me ages to decide to upgrade.
Utopia would be to be able to use Media 8 as claimed on the box and scrap the variety of other programmes it could replace. A dodgy move - as today it kept getting confused as to what was Landscape and Portrait view whilst using the cropping tool!
Once the scanner problem is solved I will post a message... note the positive declaration there.

I also have the Canon Canoscan N650U and I have the same problem. I have downloaded the new driver and I have reinstalled EMC 8 with no luck. I would like to be able to scann an image in label make without having to scan it first and then import it. It use to work with EMC 7. I placed a ticket with Roxio.

I was beginning to think I alone had problems with this issue. At least I know this is not the case.
Getting a ticket from Roxio support is a waste of time. Their boffins are tied up trying to iron out the many wrinkles in this monster they have created. It is just as well we have the forum folks to offer suggestions. As suggested, for me the only solution was to use another programme... hardly what I paid Roxio good money for.
I found the "twain not working" idea an extremely likely possibility although on another thread, some chap is having trouble importing from a Canon camera so maybe a technical conflict exists?
It doesn't help that Roxio are so quiet on all fronts.
