I have not seen much conversation on this subject lately but at one time it was HOT. I have a warning that Microsoft will no longer support XP without the SP2 upgrade. Based on earlier posts I had choosen not to upgrade to SP2 for fear of upsetting my perfectly harmonious Roxio programs. What do you all think I should do now?

As far as I know, there is no problem withe EMC7 and SP2....I never had any but just make sure you have updated your version.

I was dead set against installing SP2 for the past 2 years.  I recently had to build a new computer, so I installed SP2.  All of my older programs that I use for business, run just fine with SP2.

I also like the security of SP2.  I should have tried it out, 2 years ago. :)

I have now done a format C:/ on my backup computer and installed SP2 on it, too.

I was too, but they've issued enough 'patches' to fix the problems with the original SP2 that it should be safe to install it.

Just make certain that you install all the 'fixes' too. :)

ml,
I downloaded it the day it came out. I really have not seen a problem with it and 7.5 and 8 seem to run fine. My HD has not been reformatted
since the install either!

I've also used SP2 since day one and haven't found any problems with it.Like others said just make sure you get the fixes installed.

OK gang! Will press on. Thanks for the confidence builder on this one.  But being one who is just able to turn on a computer, I have a follow -on question. That is: if I download the SP2 package from Microsoft, will I get the "latest fixes" that some of you mention? If not, how exactly do I get them?

     Thanks nore!

If the update prompt does not come up after you have downloaded SP2, just go to Start>Help&Support>then Windows Updates.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, have you ever used Microsoft  Windows update before?

If you don't have a DSL or cable connection I would order the sp2 cd from MS and install from the disc.
Update your spyware and antivirus and scan with both. Defrag your C Drive and reboot. If your updating over the net at MS site I still shut off antivirus. My sp2 update I think took about 45 min online. Always shut off antivirus and firewall when installing from a disc!

Two options at MS Windows Update Express and Custom. Stick with Express. It will give you sp2 and all critical updates. If you need a bunch
which you will, the update will tell you sp2 has to install only. Always reboot , shut antivirus off and update with Express again. This might take you 4-5 reboots and more updates. OK?

Any questions come back and ask!

I certainly agree on getting the disk, if you have dial-up.  One thing that I would suggest is to do a clean install of XP, then install the SP2 disk and updates, after the disk, before updating anything else.

I slipstreamed disks for both of my XP licenses, so that the latest SP2 updates were installed, at the time I did the clean install.  One slipstreamed disk worked, and the other would not install, so I had to got the route of using the SP2 disk that I got 2 years ago.  I then had to spend awhile updating the SP2 from the Windows Update site.

I NEVER USE THE EXPRESS route, though. :)

I would DEFINATELY rcommend the disc, and custom - I like to know what I'm getting, and I don't get everything (like that "critical" update that was designed to call home every day to verify it's still a legal copy of WinXP).

(I trust Microsoft so much that I'm beginning to discuss Ubantu, but that's a different subject.)

Not bad at all, cd.  For some, that is a good route, but I like to half control what is installed from those updates.

I have been playing with Linux for years and have installed just about every distro (except for GenToo) at one time or another.  I really like Ubuntu the best of the bunch.  At some point - like when Vista gets shoved down our throats - I just might make the switch.  I don't think that EMC will run under Linux though so still would need to keep some version of Windoze around.
