    Backup MyPC Verify failure

I am still a "rookie" but here are some thots: From my experience this error message is saying that the verify program can not read the optical disk. My C drive was working properly. My issue was solved when I determined the drive would write only to +RW despite Roxio and manufacturer information to the contrary. It is difficult enough to wade thru the different media types but when the manufacturer does not make it clear the type of media the drive will write to, it makes you (me) crazy. See my agonizing journey above. You did not say what type of disk format you are trying to write to...+ or - R, RW. I would suggest a chat with the disk manufacturer or IBM to make sure the optical drive can write to your media. You might also ask what their explanation is for the error message. As marlinsinger points out above +RW is notoriously fragile. I have taken his advice and no longer use +RW. One time use disks are cheaper but don't go really cheap or you will pay for it in the end. I am using HP and Sony without any problems. Verify works without a hitch. Once you find out the drive's eligible media make sure you are running the updated firmware. I hope this helps. cyclingbob

Marlin: Dell Cavalry saved the day. Dell replaced the +RW drive above with a Philips DVD+-RW DVD8801 Firmware 4D28. Both the field tech and the support tech searched for updated firmware and this is latest. After install, started Backup MyPC and returned to two blank monitors. The cascade effect, I guess. Another sick feeling. Bottom Line: Dell provided 4 on site tech calls and at least 4 support calls, no less than an hour each. The Dell support tech properly diagnosed the ailing video board and I had a replacement the next day. I have tested the DVD8801 with 3 backups using MyPC on DVD+R and DVD-R with verify. All backups successful. No verify problems. Dell walked me through bios update from A05 to A09. For the first time in 6 weeks I had a backup and a good nights' sleep. Even though I had MozyPro as a fall back position, there is no better felling to have the backup disk on site. I will be testing the restore, but had no problems with EMC7 Roxio Backup. Question: Have you had any experience with DL media? I have a very lean backup on one DVD+R or -R and the extra space would let me go hog wild. I recall you said to stay away from +RW. Thanks again for your help.

Marlin: More news and good news. At least I have solved a part of the problem - "incompatible format." I have been trying to use DVD+R media with a Dell newly replaced Philips DVD+RW-D01. The specs in Roxio say it will write to DVD+R media. The short story is that this drive will never ever accept DVD+R. Nice going Dell. Here is an email to a Dell tech. The Dell tech was very helpful but apparently the Dell PC maintenance history did not show I was using a NEC which was DVD+R compatible. Caution to any who are using the Philips DVD+RW-D01. A DVD+R will never ever work! I am not sure how you broadcast this info to the forum. I hope it would save someone some time. I will talk with Dell and advise the forum. Thanks Bob. Attachment: Email to Dell Support 11 January 2007 Access to the newly installed DVD drive is still a problem and there is also a problem writing to DVD+R. As you will recall, the latest installed (December 2006) drive is: Philips DVD+RW-D01. The Philips writes to +RW but will not write to +R. The Philips replaces a NEC but I am not sure of the details. Please consult my PC’s repair history. The NEC drive replaced the original Philips DVD+RW-D01 installed at time of purchase. The original Philips DVD+RW-D01 failed. The NEC would write to +R media and it appears the Philips will not. Please see various postings below that discuss Philips failure to write to DVD+R disks. http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message? board.id=pw_cdrom&message.id=508&page=3 The failure to write to +R disks has compounded my problems. I purchased HP DVD+R media but would not write. I also purchased HP DVD-R media and again no success. Issues to resolve: 1. Accessing the D (DVD drive) 2. Writing to DVD+R media. IE7 is a problem for Roxio. Also, for your information, Roxio was bundled with my PC. I upgraded to Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 several years ago. I recently upgraded to IE7. The Roxio support forum is awash in EMC7 conflicts with IE7. Using Roxio EMC7 with the NEC drive allowed me to use DVD+R and +RW and prepare data backups (Roxio Backup). To cure these conflicts, I purchased EMC9 and rolled back IE7 to IE6. Still having the problems above. I have spent hours on the Roxio forum trying to understand why the Philips drive was rejecting the +R media and discovered the postings above. Please call me ASAP as I cannot backup my data. Thanks for your help.

Marlin: Thanks for your help. Dell has been pretty good troubleshooting this problem but I will suggest there may be a conflict and let them take it from there. Adios Bob

    Backup MyPC Verify failure

Marlin: Thanks again for the support. I am ready to say farewell to EMC9. FYI: 1 and 2. Veritas ExecView is a remnant of Backup.exe v 9.1. I could not remove thru add/remove programs. I deleted the folder via explorer. 3. I have already slimmed down my startup to only 7 programs. No backup software loading in these 7 programs. I have also reviewed Administrtative Services. To be honest here, I am not sure what most of these services do and have left the those running that threaten to disable other services. Roxio is the only backup software with services running. On January 5, I updated to Norton Internet Security 2007. Even though Roxio Backup and Backup MyPC can "see" the DVD, I cannot write to the DVD. I can no longer use windows to copy files to a CD (not DVD) but I can use Roxio. I am not sure what the problem is but I am pretty much done with this struggle. Paying for support from day 1 has always aggravated me. Do you think Roxio paid support would fix my problem(s)? I know you can not guarantee Roxio help but is EMC9 as buggy as the forum suggests? It may not be worth my time. I am concerned if I unistall EMC9 I will have no way copy files to a CD since windows is not working. I cringe at the "reinstall the OS" that I am sure Dell will preach to me. As I mentioned, I need to backup data on a DVD and would like software for video and slide show produciton. Any thots? Thanks very much for your help. Bob

    Backup MyPC Verify failure

Marlin: FYI it looks like Drag to Disk was responsible for the previous message: #1. Error Message: Unable to allcate a system resource (DRVMCDB.SYS) that provides access to one or more backup device. Please wait till other applications are done.... Maybe we are on the right track. I will remove Drag to Disk and rollback WMP to 10. There are no Sonic Products in Add/Remove Programs Backup MyPC is part of the EMC9 and not a stand alone install. In Add/Remove Programs I have VERITAS ExecView but it refuses to uninstall. Veritas V 9.1 has been removed previosly. I have also removed DivX. What is HighMat Extension to MS WinXP CD Writing Wizard? I will give this a test Weds AM and advise you of the results. If your not on Roxio's payroll you should be. Thanks.

Thanks for the quick response. 1. Enable CD recording on this drive is NOT checked. 2. Groan = continually running. This is a new drive replaced by DELL on 29 Dec 2006 3. and 4. In Roxio Backup Disc and Device Utility the drive recognizes the Sony DVD+R and prior to Roxio Backup Burn the drive recognizes the DVD+R. On the bottom of the screen I change the Disc size to DVD 4.7 but when I go to run the Roxio backup I get "Cannot write medium. Incompatible format - Illegal request... All these problems started with IE7 and EMC7 several weeks ago. Roxio Backup jobs would not verify and fail. IE7 has been rolled back to IE6 prior to the EMC9 reinstall. I have removed all burning software that I know of as part of the EMC9 reinstall. I have WMP11. Maybe go back a version? Roxio Drag to Disk also installed. I will stay at this a bit longer but any suggestions on an alternative to EMC9? I need backup software and something to do video/slide shows. I had very good luck with EMC7 but EMC9 has not measured up and time is running out for EMC9. Thanks a bunch.

Marlin, Thanks for the testing. I appreciate your help. I hope I have not worn out my welcome. I had a blue screen after the verify problem and prior to your most recent post. The bottom line is that I removed several backup programs, notably sychback, and reinstalled EMC 9. But now have the following problems: #1. Error Message: Unable to allcate a system resource (DRVMCDB.SYS) that provides access to one or more backup device. Please wait till other applications are done.... Roxio backup disc and device utility says "The device is reserved by another application. Sonic Solutions Drag-to-Disc Kernel) #2. Sometimes the drive groans on an will not shut off. Reboot needed. #3. Backup MyPc will not recognize the DVD+R. I have both Sony and HP. This is prior to your post above noting Verbatim. #4. If I go to Roxio backup under Disc and Device Utility, the device recognizes a Sony DVD+R. I am a drowing man here... I posted this on the EMC email support on 1/7/07 but no response. Thanks very much.
  9. This post is in the wrong area. How do I move to Sonic Applications? Thanks. Backup MyPC is not reading the media: I have tried Sony DVD+R 1x-16x and HP 16x DVD+R and HP 16x DVD-R The specs from DVDInfo say the drive will write DVD+R and +RW. The Disc Information from EMC9 says: Suported Media: CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM (Is this the same as DVD-R?) and DVD+RW In a previous post I have tried +RW and the backup set runs, but in all 4 cases fails to verify. I am using a Philips DVD+RW-D01 with updated firmware to v. 1.9 Thanks very much.

    Backup MyPC Verify failure

I am a new user to Backup MyPc. The verify has failed on every job. I am using +RW media. When I insert a previosly used +RW I am prompted to run a Backup MyPc format...I am not sure of the exact word used). I have also done a full erase on a +RW. I have run 4 jobs with 4 different +RW disks and verify fails every time. This drive has been replaced by Dell on 28 December and the firmware was updated at that time. Any thots on getting past the verify errors? Here is the latest job report.
