  1. Ok after using the scripts for two days everything is working perfectly. However this made me have another idea for what Roxio should add. I find myself downloading and encoding more shows than I will ever watch on my iPod especially since scrubs airs like 5 times a day on comedy central. It would be awesome if there was some way to download shows based on what actually gets watched kind of like how a podcast stops downloading if they are not being listened to. I think this has the potential to be really great software if someone put more effort into the TiVoToGo aspect of it. Until then I will somehow try to make the scripts smarter so I'm not copying everything off my TiVo indefinitely.
  2. I'm just going to post the code here...it's a little sloppy I'm not really an applescript/coding expert just a frustrated customer who decided to take matters in to his own hands. Heres the first script. It deletes the downloaded Tivo files from the previous day and opens tivo transfer for new transfers. Some minor adjustments will need to be made like folder locations. If you have the default Tivoshows folder location it should be in you home folder. Just put your user name where it says <insert your user name>. I have it set to empty the trash so if you keep stuff in the trash you might want to keep you will either need to change this practice or let me know how I can delete the Tivo files immediately without sending it to the trash. You will need to create a folder called "Temp" in the TivoShows folder for this first script to work properly. I'll probably have the script automatically create the folder in the future but as of right now I figured it was easier to just make the folder manually. TivoToGo Phase 1 tell application "Popcorn" quit end tell tell application "Finder" select (every item of folder "Macintosh HD:Users:<insert your user name>:TiVoShows" whose kind is {"Tivo Movie File"}) make alias to selection at folder "Macintosh HD:Users:<insert your user name>:TiVoShows:Temp" delete (every item of folder "Macintosh HD:Users:<insert your user name>:TiVoShows" whose kind is {"Tivo Movie File"}) move files of folder "Macintosh HD:Users:<insert your user name>:TiVoShows:Temp" to folder "Macintosh HD:Users:<insert your user name>1:TiVoShows" empty trash end tell tell application "TiVo Transfer for Popcorn" activate end tell -------------------------------------------------- The second part closes the Tivo Transfer program and opens the Tivo movie files with popcorn and then uses GUI scripting to intiate the encode process. TivoToGo Phase 2 tell application "TiVo Transfer for Popcorn" quit end tell tell application "Popcorn" activate end tell tell application "Finder" open files in folder "Macintosh HD:Users:<insert your user name>:TiVoShows" using application file "popcorn" of folder "Macintosh HD:Applications" end tell delay 10 tell application "Popcorn" activate end tell tell application "System Events" keystroke "r" using (command down) keystroke return end tell -------------------------------------------------- These are two different scripts and should be set to go off using iCal or cron a couple of hours after each other depending on how many files you have set to auto transfer. Well thats all there is to it. Feel free to edit it but please post any tweaks that make the scripts better. Hopefully Roxio will build in these fixes in future updates but knowing how they do business they will probably charge for it. This should go with out saying but use these scripts at your own discretion as I offer no guarantees as to how this will work on your specific system.

Well I put together 2 applescript's that will do what Roxio has failed to do, completely automate the process from TiVo to itunes/ipod. If your interested in the scripts leave a message in this thread and I will get it to you. Also if you want to tweak these script and make it even better feel free. Hopefully Roxio will fix their buggy software so we don't have to rely on workarounds but I'm not going to hold my breath. The way I made the scripts is I have one to initiate transfers and one to encode. I set these scripts to run at two different times while I'm sleeping using iCal. The first script which i run at 1am makes Aliases to the TiVo files already in the TivoShows folder then deletes the original file. I do this to save space. The aliases trick autotransfer into thinking previously downloaded files are still in the folder so they don't get re-downloaded. It then opens Roxios Tivo Transfer program. I choose not to auto empty the trash but I may add that in if I find myself forgetting to manually empty it. If anyone knows how I can delete the Tivo files automatically without sending it to the trash please let me know. I run the next script at 5am it opens the downloaded files with popcorn and uses GUI scripting to start the encoding. After all of this you have a show in itunes with all the metadata ready to be put on your ipod. I just wrote this today so I haven't tested it much but so far its working good. Considering it took me one day to get this to work I really hope Roxio will come up with a built in solution so I don't have to guess how much time I need to leave between downloading and encoding. Plus I paid for Roxio to write working software not for the opportunity to fix their bugs.

  5. 1. Make sure the metadata is copied into itunes. Currently this does not work when auto-encode is enabled. 2. Delete the .Tivo file after it is encoded and transfered to itunes. There's no point in having 2 copies of the same show, its just wasting space. 3. Have Autotransfer determine what needs to be transfered based on a log file. Right now it transfers based on what is in the Tivotransfer folder. This means if anything is deleted from this folder it will be re-downloaded. I don't know about the rest of you but I don't have an infinite amount of space and can't keep every Tivo file forever. These are all basic suggestions that should have been working when this software was released. It doesn't seem like a huge amount of work to get these issues fixed and if some one at Roxio had actually tried out this software before releasing it they would have caught these issues. If someone at Roxio actually cares about their customers and their product they will fix these problems in the next release. If not I guarantee you have lost at least one customer and I'm sure more will follow. I honestly think more software companies need to take a cue from Google. They actually listen to their users and regularly release additions to their software that their users want and that are just basically common sense additions much like the ones I have listed above.

iTune Show info for Tivo recordings

Yes i did. They didn't go into itunes automatically they were dumped on to the desktop. When i double clicked the video on the desktop it would copy to itunes without the metadata. Do you work for roxio? You seem quick to push the blame on to Tivo. The thing is this feature was buggy on release of popcorn well before Tivo updated their OS. I am fairly certain this is a problem with the Roxio software because like I said in earlier posts this problem only comes up when the process is automated. You could take the same Tivo file that was auto encoded wrong and manually open it in popcorn (by dragging it into popcorn) and have it give you a perfectly converted h.264 file with full metadata. This is definitely Roxio's fault.

iTune Show info for Tivo recordings

I told roxio about this problem before they took the new popcorn out of beta. They choose not to fix it for whatever reason. Your probably having it auto encode after transferring. That seems to be the problem. If you transfer it then manually open popcorn and start the encode process it will go into itunes the right way. This should be any easy fix for roxio but I guess since they already got paid it does them no good to fix it. I expect that it will be fixed in popcorn 4. In a year or so for a simple upgrade fee we can have this bug corrected. Thanks roxio.

    Popcorn still screwed up

Sure ill try it tonight but its definitely going to take a while. I have a 1.33Mhz G4 Powerbook. You want me to check from my S2 or S3?

    Popcorn still screwed up

Yeah i don't seem to have this problem I have both an S2 and an S3 and I use turbo.264 to encode for iPod in the highest setting. I haven't transfered anything from my S2 since MRV for the S3 came out though. I now basically only use the S2 in my bedroom so I can watch what's on my S3.

    Popcorn still screwed up

The thing is it works perfectly if i manually open up popcorn drag the TiVo file on to it and tell it to export for iPod. The result of this action puts a copy in iTunes with the show name, episode, and description of the episode. Checking the box in TivoTransfer to automatically encode in popcorn yields the the show exported to itunes with only the actual file name. My problem is that this didn't work well before leopard was released and they choose to take the software out of beta before this issue was resolved. This makes me think that they think everything is fixed when clearly it is not. If they had simply released an update to the beta and said that they are working on a metadata fix I would have been fine with that. But from my experience once a final software update is released the next one is usually months away. I understand they have a lot of fixing to do and I sympathize with them but this is not free software people pay for it so fixes for bugs is not something Roxio is doing as a favor, it is something that is necessary for the software to live up to the cost paid for it. My gripe is that I explained this problem exactly before the final version was out and it was still not resolved. I don't see how this could be all that difficult to fix considering it works perfectly when the Tivo file export is user initiated.

    Popcorn still screwed up

I didn't really notice it. I have been waiting for the auto sync feature to work before I really start using this software regularly. I see no point in watching the shows on my computer when I could just watch it on my HDTV. My ipod is a different story though. It would be great if the process was automated so i don't have to remember to turn it on and I could have it take place while I'm sleeping. I haven't really noticed anything with the audio, I guess I should take a closer look.

    Popcorn still screwed up

I'm not saying they won't fix it but given how long they took to get this update out and the fact that I specifically told paratox about this problem (which he acknowledged) and it still isn't 100% pisses me off. Since this is the final version of this update and not another version of the beta I don't think they are going to have another update for a couple of months. And even then who knows if they will find this issue important when they obviously didn't care this time. The only reason I got toast and popcorn was for the TivoToGo aspect. OSX has burning capabilities built in which is all that I need for the few CD's I burn on occasion. If TivoToGo doesn't work right there's no point to using this software, atleast for me.

    Popcorn still screwed up

Its officially out of beta and it still doesn't import encoded files to itunes like its supposed to. It finally imports the file into itunes but it doesn't have the show info. I will never buy Roxio software. I as well as others have explained this problem clearly both before and during the beta. Now that this is out of beta I doubt this will be fixed any time soon. I got this program specifically to automate the process of getting shows from my TiVo to my iPod because that was the one feature that was lacking in Toast. Now I have two pieces of software that can do a bunch of things i don't need them to do and not the one ADVERTISED thing that I got them for TiVoToGo. If you have any desire to appease your users please fix this with the Toast update because we all know another popcorn update is not likely for months, if even that.

Popcorn 3 - Tivo not going to Itunes

I have this problem too. This is definitely a bug because there is an option to save to itunes.
