    .avi File

so i have a .avi file i would like to burn to dvd. i put the file into popcorn, went through the process of encoding and writing, and i was told the disc was finished. however, my dvd player won't play it back. is this a problem with the file format or another problem i could have possibly made along the way? EDIT: my dvd player tells me it cannot play "this type of disc."
