    Thank you for responding. I have made sure that the names line up exactly. When I play it in Quicktime, no subtitles. I have Quicktime Pro. It does not help. Under the "View" menu the option to view subtitles is not illuminated. I am using OS 10.5.5. Could that be a reason?

    I'm sorry, but I have tried every which way to make this work. I am using Toast 9 and I installed Perian but do not see where it is making any difference. What is it supposed to do? I have tried converting it to a DivX file and played it in Quicktime. I have burned it three times - twice as an .avi file and once as a DivX file -- and no subtitles. What am I missing here?
