How Do You Make .mts Files Work In Toast 11?

I swear, had I known that creating video in a .mts file format would have caused me this many headaches with my mac, I'm not sure what I would have done! I'm sure this has been discussed ad nauseum, but can someone please tell me the best way to convert .mts files so they can be used in Toast 11? Do I need to buy a converter? Can I upload them as is? I know iMovie '11 can't do it, so I'm hoping Toast 11 is easier to use. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks - Andy
