Media Center Receiver service error every 10 sec

Rob80

Question

I have a sony vaio with an ati all-in-wonder x1800xl running media center 2005. When I install either roxio suite 8 or 9 it disables my video capture in media center and I get a constant error "Media Center Receiver Service error. If I uninstall roxio suite either 8 or 9 the error goes away and I can capture video in the media center. I have all the latest drivers from ATI and microsoft. I would like to run your suite is there a fix or workaround? I found this problem in a few forums and it appears to be something it both versions 8 and 9 but no solutions. I have install and reinstalled the Media center over 10 time and can't seem to find the problem.

Thanks for the tips Rob. I run a pretty tight ship when it comes to having the latest drivers and all but I am going to try to do a complete reinstall of my audio and video drivers and see if that helps.
Well, I did all of that and still no go. I just noticed a couple of other guys in the Windows Media Center forum experiencing the same issues with EMC 8. They said the same thing I did regarding if they uninstall EMC, all is well again.

Please, anyone out there with any ideas? I like what EMC says it can do and therefore I do not want to take this back for a refund. I'm willing to get my hands dirty....well, that was five days ago...and I'm up to my neck now. :)

Yes Ulead is one of the problems but I think it goes deeper. I found that if I uninstall my video drivers (ATI x1800) to install a newer version. The roxio software some how conflicts with media center. In my case my tv tuner is disabled. I found that I have to do a clean MCE install for the tuner to work. I think it has to do with how the codec's and tuners are registered and which one get installed first. I think ulead, roxio and ati all use the cinemaster codec's and they all conflict with each other. I blame microsoft for poor standards for the codec's and for an operating system that let poorly written software crash the operating system. For now I am waiting for better software and drivers to be written. I am also playing with the iMac with is very impressive. It turns on instantly no long bootups and it has unix.

This problem perplexed me a while as well. The problem disappeared when I removed Easy Media Creator 8. So I thought the error must be due to Roxio. Next I tried Nero 7 software but got the error message again! I read the thread by Rob80 and finally found the solution. I had Ulead software which was bundled with my Hauppauge PVR - USB 2. By removing Ulead, BOTH Roxio and Nero worked.

By process of elimination, Ulead's software must be the source of conflict.

The resolution for people who have a tv tuner besides Hauppauge is to checked the bundled software it came with. Some of the software is causing a conflict with Media Center. It can't be Easy Media because some people have no trouble running it with Media Center.

Are you using IE7? I seem to have a couple of different possibilities including recently having upgraded my ATI drivers, moving to IE7 and having EC7, EC8 and EC9 still on my computer. I am afraid to remove the other two versions of EC because I have several slide shows that were created on each of them and am concerned they might not move to the EM9. I had that problem in EC5 and EC6.

After you restored, did you reinstall IE7? Do you have more than one version of EC on your system? THere seem to be only a few people on the forum with this problem. I have a 8400 Dimension Dell with an ATI 800 XT video card.

Your slide shows will not transfer from one version to the next. They will open, but any text or transitions that you had in the previous version will not show up in the next version.

I had the same thing- I spoke to Dell three times- three diff. answers. Finally in frustration I restored first for a week then three weeks and then back to Dec. 01- which worked - the error message disappeared and my tuner problem was solved. For fun I restored back to jan 05 and the error message reappeared and my tuner stopped again. So back in time I went to Dec and all works now. No idea why. sirzacxk

I have the same problem with Media Center Receiver service error every ten seconds. I have an ATI videocard (800XT), a Dell 8400 Dimension System with 2GB Ram and have MCE05. I have Easy Media Creator 7.5, 8.0 and 9.0 installed.

The worst part is the error dialogue box will not go away and is a real irritant. Short of eliminating EM9 is there any work around.

I not sure why mine works, although now I have a problem where I can't update the ATI drivers. If I try MCE can't find the tuners. ATI said go back to the 6.9 drivers until they can figure it out. I think yours and my problems are a combination of bad ATI drivers, poorly written software from Roxio and the big one MCE short for ME. That is why Microsoft recommends MCE be installed by an OEM where they can write custom drivers and software for there products. The bottom line is that unless it came from the OEM no software is 100% compatiable with MCE.

As for yor problem the best solution is to disable the 3 MCE services which will not allow you to run your tuner in the MCE environment, but you can play movies and listen to music. Use the ATI mediacenter it is much better for TV and recording. If you still want to troubleshoot try different versions of the ATI drivers, don't install roxio until everything works in MCE. Get all Microsoft updates, install .net 1.0 then update to .net 2.0 that is what I did and maybe it a leftover .net driver. If you don't have ghost get it. It speeds let you go back to a previous install within 30 min.

One last word Vista has media center which has been rewritten so that may give you a clue that the XP MCE may have had some flaws. It mybe worth getting Vista

Sorry I could not be more helpfull

Rob

Rob, I'm sure you have reasons for your MS comments but I must disagree.

MCE is identical to XP Pro minus some of the domain features. (Please everybody...don't hijack this thread by discussing your opinions of MS)

I have MCE working as advertised, tuner works great, ATI works great, Media Center Services work great, UNTIL I install EMC 9. Once I install Roxio, I get the error message stated in this thread every 5 minutes or so, lose my Tuner, and MCE services are eratic.

I'm not placing blame on MS, ATI or Roxio...just the facts...some users, not all, can't get the three to work nicely together. PLEASE NOTE THAT I SAID SOME USERS, I don't benefit from posters telling me that "it works for me." Well that's great but it doesn't really help does it?

So far Roxio, ATI or MS has not been able to assist me in getting this worked out.

So, once I uninstalled EMC 9, wow...my Media Center PC works perfectly again, no system restore or reinstallation of Windows was needed.

So, until I see a fix for this, EMC 9 will not be on my system. This is really weird since I have used Adaptec/Roxio/Sonic software for years and have not had any issues.

I encountered the same problem- every five seconds I get the Media center receiver service etc etc" I have spoken to tjree different Dell techs- all of whom gave me diff. instructions- remove Roxio but I need the Dvd- to re-install- ask Microsoft- and then do a total PC Restore- I am afraid to do the last one as i can't backup right now- have you had any success at all? Thanks much sirzack

The next time you get the receiver error click the small link in the diaglog box to get a more details of the error. It should tell you what is causing the error. My error was cinemasteraudio.dll conflict with ehrecvr.exe. Also make sure you install all including the optional updates from microsoft. If your using a wireless mouse update to the latest drivers. Also update to media player 11 which has newer codec. make sure your using the latest version of microsoft .net 2.0. I know what your going through its a real pain. If you don't have ghost I would recommend it. It lets you recover quickly. I think my problem was a audio codec or the wireless mouse drivers as well as too many codecs installed with the ulead video studio. You can try "mce-repair02" it does fix some mce .net problems. It didn't for me but some have found it to worked. I lost the web site but should be easy to fix. hopefully that works

This is very frustrating to say the least.

I have uninstalled EMC 9 and my system is working like it should, including my TV Tuner in MCE 2005. I then did a clean install of EMC 9 per Roxio's instructions at here. This only brought back the same error message "Media Center has encountered a problem and needs to close" as well as losing my TV Tuner.

I really want to get EMC 9 going and do not know where to go next.

I reinstalled my ATI Theater 550 Pro tuner using the drivers supplied by Gateway for my PC.

I have experienced the same problem installing EMC 9 Suite with Media Center 2005. EMC 9 works great except for the nagging error "Media Center Reciever has encountered a problem and needs to close" and that I can no longer use the Media Center Edition TV Tuner options. I was on the phone with Roxio tech support for over an hour and cound not get this resolved.

My PC is an Intel Pentium D with 2 GB 4200 Ram, dedicated 250GB Sata HD, Intel Express G chip video which is very reliable, ATI Tuner card.

I think the problem may lie with EMC 9 and the ATI Tuner card but have not been able to isolate it to find a work around. I too have all of the latest updates and drivers except for IE7 (still unsure about upgrading to IE7 just yet because of remote email server issues not related to EMC 9).

Anybody find a solution to this problem? I have my recently purchased EMC 9 on ice until I can find a work around.

Thanks in advance,

Bill Kellum

I found the problem / fix for my pc. My problem seem to be with roxio and ulead video studio. It was a codec conflict, the cinemasterAudio.dll and something else I could not find that caused the MCE reciever constant error. It may have also have been fixed by ati updated drivers. Here what I did to fix the problem.

Reinstall mce

install microsoft .net 2.0

install ati drivers for aiw x1800lx

install ati driver for ati HDTV wonder

delete video registry for mce video

configure mce tuners manually for both tuners

configure ATI media center

install roxio 9 suite

install all microsoft update

install any other software including IE7 and media player 11, adobe premiere

just don't install ulead video studio

Thats all I did and everything work great.

If you don't have ulead try reloading the .net 2.0 and the mce reinstall patched or updates.

If you don't want to reinstall mce I think you could uninstalling the ati software

and reinstalling microsoft .net 2.0 first then a the latest ati software.

.net 2.0 will reregister and fix the receiver error.

ATI just released 6.12 so I have just ghosted my pc and I will try to install ulead video studio 10 to see if it will work. There has been a lot of patches for ati, microsoft, and ulead.

Hope that helps

Rob

I tried running videowave that made things worst its looking for a 00541.msi file on the install disk that does not exist. Everytime I startup I get a install dialog box. WHat a pain.

For my other problem I found renaming the cinemasterAudio.dll stops the constant mce receiver error that conflicts with ehrecvr.exe. I still can't watch TV with MCE My TV. Although my HDTV wonder HD tuner (digital) works great in MCE. I have seen lots of people with this same error when I google "cinemaster mce" or "ati" but no one has a fix. This sony VAIO has a sigmatel audio card could be the audio card drivers but sony is the only source. I tried running the custom install for FLACKY Roxio suite 9 but there not much to customize. Can't figure out how to uninstall the cinemaster software. I have done alot of changes so I'll ghost back to before I installed roxio and try again. Is MCE just ME. Also so far Roxio support has yet to respond. Maybe they want me to send them more money. Looks like its time to go back to NERO

I haven't gotten any errors on my HP MCE computer. I also have the latest DivX installed with no conflicts and I can watch TV/record with no errors.

Did you ever get the MPEG 2 activation yet? Maybe that's your problem. Run Videowave. Close it. Do that several times until you get the MPEG activation notice. YOu must be connected to the net for that. Once activated, see if that fixed the problem.

No the error is a Microsoft Media center ehrecvr.exe error that conflicts with cinemasterAudio.dll. So here what I did to get the constant MCE error to go away.

I ran the msconfig a tried disabling just about everything and heres what I found. Disabling the DMXlauncher, Drgtodsk, roxwatchtray9 and also renaming the 3 roxio cinemaster DLL's (CinemasterAudio.dlx, CinemasterVCDNav.dlx, CinemasterVideo.dlx) so they don't load got fix the constant Media Center Receiver service error. I was able to capture in Roxio media cature program and moviemaker. But My TV in MCE still disabled, I can not watch MCE My TV or record. It looks like its the cinemaster codec is not compatable with MCE. Is the a way to uninstall the cinemaster codec. I also saw on Microsofts knowledge base the DivX is also not compatible in MCE. Do you have instructions how to uninstall DivX.

Thanks

Are you referring to Windows Media Center software or ATI's Multimedia Center software? The only conflict that I am aware is the DAO.MSI. Do a search on the forum for 'DAO'.

Yes but as soon as it start I get the constant error. It looks like it a codec compatability with cinemaster.

The error is between ehrecvr.exe and cinemasterAudio.dll

I tried to install EMC 9 on a MCE machine but did not get the error. Are you able to manually start the service even after it's disabled?
