You may have to live with that quality since you do not have a Firewire port. I tried to clean it up using Creator or PowerDVD and was not happy with either.

Do you know anyone that has a digital camcorder that has a passthrough feature so you can plug your camcorder into it and then into the computer?

Sorry, I've run out of ideas. At least you know that you are not doing anything wrong.

Thanks for all you contributions. It is so disappointing spending all that money on new equipment to find out that the end product is so substandard. I have loads of old cassettes of holidays like Skiing, Route 66 and lots of others which will not download until I can find a quality product.

If you guys think of something then please let me know!!!

The problem is that you have a laptop which does not allow you to capture at the best quality - which would be via Firewire to a DV avi format. The quality is not Roxios fault. The Roxio device and software was basically designed for capturing analog VHS video.

After several posts you have never bothered to tell us how you are hooked up.

We are just trying to see if there are some things that could be changed to give you a better quality. Personally I don;t think there is anything that can be done without spending some $$$.

1) Are you using the AV port on the camcorder?

2) Are you using that AV port to connect to the Roxio USB device

3) Are you using a USB 2 or USB 3 port or the powered port. They may have different amount of power going to them. For instance, in a desktop, one should always use a USB port on the back of the computer.

(Perhaps if you post and image of the set up it would answer all the questions).

Please double check the ID of the camcorder; I can't find it on the web. There are others close to that designation but that doesn mean they are the same or even close.

WHAT is the quality of the tape??? What was it recorded at?

Some of the camcorders that utilized "small cassettes" only did VHS while others were 'Digital' (dvd)...

The EVD line captures at a DVD Quality (720 X 480) at HQ Only.

But you can make it Worse depending on your output settings from EVD3 :lol::huh:

More: You got me interested so I dug out my old USB device and an older Sharp camcorder that plays Hi8 tapes (i'm not sure it even records anymore). I also dug out an old Hi* tape from 2001. I captured a short segment of a baseball game. Mine is slightly better than yours is but it does have the "jaggies" I was able to correct it just a little so it was watchable.

The question now becomes how important are the Hi8 tapes you have? If they are important, then the resolution is secondary. The tape that I captured from was a college baseball game where my son was the catcher. Note that I had captured this tape several years ago ! :o The quality was the same.

As you know, capturing is a 1:1 time ratio. some there is a lot of commitment. I had one friend that wanted to capture old TV programs but when I told him that it will take one hour to capture a one hour video program, his stack of todo's got a lot shorter. .

Thanks for the replies. I have a Sony HANYCAM DCR-HC2E and a Acer Aspire V3-772G laptop. I have bought all the new equipment ,apart from the Sony Handycam, for video editing. The software I have recently purchased is the Roxio VHS to DV 3 plus and the Cyberlink Powerdirctor 12.

regards Mickg

PS I also have a new Sony Handycam HDR-CX250E with a hard drive that work fine with Powerdirector 12.

The Sony records in digital format to DV tape and you should use the Firewire port (iLink) on the camera to capture. You also need a Firewire port on your capture computer.

VHS2DVD 3 is basically for capturing from analog camcorders or VHS players and is the wrong software to capture.

How have you hooked up the handycam to the capture device?

??? How about answering the questions I asked

You have a DV camcorder but without knowing what it was recorded at, SP or LP we don't know what you can expect.

Likewise How did you capture it? Composite or S-Video?

Likewise you have yet to tell us what your output has been.

Most likely the Laptop does not have a Firewire port

Most likely the Laptop does not have a Firewire port

Most likely the Laptop does not have a Firewire port

It doesn't as far as I can tell.

I don;t know how the triple quotes happened !

Does the camcorder have an AV port? You may be able to use that.

Is it Av out? Are you using that to connect to the USB device and then to the computer?

Right click on one of the video you captured and select properties and then go to Details. What does that say about the captured video? Remember that you are NOT recording in high definition. Your other camcorder is a high definition camcorder.

If you really want some additional help, use that camcorder to capture about 5 seconds of video (as you would do normally) and post it to an online sharing site so we can look at it. I use YAA.im to post short videos. When you have dome that, post a link to it here.

The quality is just a little worse than what I expected via capture from a USB set up. I have played it with 3 different video players. The resolution is about what I expect and there is a very quiet audio track. There is not much more you can do.

What is the resolution you recorded at (camcorder settings) ? Do you also have Creator on your computer?

My suggestion, take VHS to DVD back to the store to complain it doesn't work with your camcorder/computer.

Firewire to USB converters are not very good. Is the HDMI on the laptop an input jack. You might find a Firewire to HDMI converter. Does the laptop have the ability to accept an external card like a firewire port.? You may want to contact the computer manufacturer to see. Pinnacle used to have a device that accepted a Firewire input along with the AV input and connected via USB. I don;t see it anymore so perhaps it didn't work well.

Note: When I bought the Laptop, it didn't have a firewire connection. I bought a new camcorder ! :o:P
