Blu Ray Problems With Toast 12

colboy

Question

Hi,

I have just purchased Toast 12 pro and using it with Maverick, when burning Blu Ray discs on to a Samsung writer with a .mov film file all seems to work well and Toast says it was successful,

however when playing the film back on a blu ray player the film gets about half way through and then starts to freeze and skip, I have tried playing them on different players but get the same problem.

Any one have any ideas? I am wondering if it is the blank discs but it is now getting expensive throwing so many of them away.

Thanks for any help

Colin

Thanks for the advice, when you say not to boost the encoding rate too high, I use the auto setting set at 'best' is this too high, if so what settings do you recommend, I don't really understand the encoding stuff.

Thanks again for your help

The Best setting should be fine. There is a custom encoder settings window where users can select the bit rate up to the maximum allowed in the Blu-ray spec. That's what becomes a problem. Many users think they will be able to see a quality difference with very high bit rates but that's usually not the case. Toast's presets are not boosted too high.

Your disc stuttering part way through has me thinking the problem is when the disc changes to another layer (I think Blu-ray media has 8 layers). Either it didn't get burned properly or there is something wrong with that particular disc. Also check that your Blu-ray player has current firmware. This isn't a concern if your Blu-ray player is connected to your network because any update will automatically be downloaded and applied.

I suspect the disc itself, but I'm only guessing. When making a Blu-ray video disc I recommend always choosing Save as Disc Image instead of clicking the burn button. Then burn the resulting .toast file to disc using the Image File setting in the Toast Copy window. You can preview the video on the disc image by mounting it (which happens when you select it in the Copy window) and viewing with Roxio Video Player in the Toast Extras menu. It won't have a working menu but you can watch the video to see if there are any problems before burning the disc.

My only other caveat is to not boost the encoding bit rate too high in Toast's custom encoder settings window as high bit rates can be a problem for players.

It could be the next disc you burn will work.
