Error On Burning Video From Vhs To Dvd Via Toast 12

davemacq

Question

I am getting a repeated error when burning a video: Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST Sense Code = 0x21, 0x02 BUFFER UNDERRUN. I am transferring VHS videos via Roxio VHS to DVD Video Capture, creating an mp4 iMovie, and then burning the mp4 to disk using Toast 12, all on MacBook Air Macintosh 10.10.1. I have 48 Gb free space on the computer and the mp4 is 11.3 Gb in size. Any suggestions?

Why did you create an mp4 movie? When you burn it to a standard 4.7GB DVD it will be "down converted" to mpg format. Or do you simply want to store the mp4 file on eth DVD as data? In that case it of course will not fit.

Buffer Underrun also means that the data is not being transferred fast enough from your computer to the burner.

Thanks. Reason --- my wife has some old VHS tapes she wants to keep, so with Roxio VHS to DVD Plus, I wanted to obtain them digitally and store them on DVD. The VHS to DVD software creates a .mov file, and Roxio suggests creating a movie with iMovie (which creates a mp4 file), and then burn to DVD. I do not care about the format as long as I can play it as a video, and since Toast 12 claims to be able to compress it to one DVD, it seemed best to create it with Toast on a DVD. I can of course split it in iMovie, and create two DVDs, but one is preferred. I know what the error Buffer Underrun means, but not what to do about it.

Are you using Easy VHS to DVD for Mac to capture the video from VHS? If so, are you using Easy VHS to DVD Capture or are you using Roxio Video Capture as the application for doing the capture? This matters because Roxio replaced the first app with the second and the process for making a DVD changed between the two. If you are capturing using the PC version of that device, what format is it creating when it does the capture?

For decent quality when putting as much as 3 hours of video on one single-layer disc I suggest the following: At the bottom of the Toast window set the disc type to DVD DL. When you have everything ready to burn the disc choose Save as Disc Image (File menu) instead of clicking the burn button. This will create a .toast file on the hard drive. When that is done switch to the Toast Copy window and choose Image File as the setting. Add the .toast file. Change the disc type to DVD. When you click the burn button Toast will first do additional compression to fit everything to the single-layer DVD and then burn the disc.

Buffer underrun is uncommon and may indicate a problem with the disc burning drive or the drive's ability to work well with the brand of discs you are using. It also could be something else interfering with the flow of data to the drive. Hopefully you won't run into that again. Burning from an image file is usually the most reliable way to burn discs.

Thanks. Sounds like great suggestions, and I will incorporate them.

I am using Roxio Video Capture in the Macintosh version, which creates a .mov file. Then iMovie to create a mp4 file, and finally burning to DVD via Toast 12.

Technically you don't need to add the video to iMovie. The captured video can work directly in Toast. If you want to trim the video you can use QuickTime Player which is faster than using iMovie. However, iMovie has themes and the ability to add transitions and additional audio tracks. So if you want to spruce up the video adding to iMovie is a great way to go.
