Files Always Too Large For Destination Drive

Hi everyone, I am hoping one of you can help me. I transferred several family videos from VHS to my computer using the "computer" option in Roxio Easy VHS to DVD 3. The transfer went okay, but now I want to copy the file to a thumb drive but it says the file is too large for the destination drive. The file size was about 11 gigs but the thumb drive is a 16-gig drive so I don't know why it won't fit? I even went in and exported the "project" again at a lower quality level so the file size was then 6.4 gigs, and it still won't fit on a 16 gig thumb drive. I am having the same problem with files that I transferred that are about 2-1/2 gigs and it says they are too large to fit on a DVD which is supposed to hold up to about 4-1/2 gigs. Can someone please explain to me what I am doing wrong? I am desperate to figure this out because I have to make many DVD copies of family videos for Christmas gifts and I'm dead in the water at this point. I would be very grateful for any help anyone can provide. Thank you for taking the time to read my post.

Roxio encodes at 9 plus mega bytes a second at a constant bit rate.

 

What that means is you only get one hour in viewing time on a standard single layer DVD two hours on a dual layer DVD.

 

So the 11 gigs your trying to put on a 16 gig USB Drive will grow beyond it's capacity.

Thank you very much for the info cdanteek, I appreciate it very much. I guess for the 11 gig file I'll have to figure something else out. However, on the 2-1/2 gig video files, each time I "exported" the recorded video from the program I used the "Computer" option and it defaulted to the "PAL" frame rate, and since I know very little about this, I just used the default settings. I wonder if by selecting the "DVD" option if it would automatically compress the recorded file to fit a DVD? Perhaps I'll have to give that a try too. TIME!

 

What is the total time of your projects/files. Video is measured in Time and file sizes are useless.

 

The file size is a result of the time and the settings... The tail does not wag the dog, so give us the information and we can make some suggestions

Hi Jim. The time of the videos I am trying to put on the DVD's ranges from about 50 to 90 minutes. They are old videos of family picnics I took years ago with the big old-style "Camcorder" type unit that recorded directly onto a full-size VHS tape. (Now that's aging me a bit)

The 50 minute will fit any 4.7 DVD but the 90 min will either require a split and 2 4.7 DVDs or a DL (8.5) DVD.

 

The Only Option that will produce a DVD Movie is the DVD option

 

The one you are using, Computer, will only produce a file that your PC can play and maybe some DVD Players.

Thanks Jim. I'll pick up some DL DVD's on my way home from work tonight and give them a try. My only concern now would be if the DVD players will recognize the DL DVD's because I'm sure most of the people I plan to give the discs to have DVD players that are probably 5 or 10 years old. At that point though I'll just use your suggestion to split the videos between multiple discs. I appreciate your help.

That IS a consideration...

 

EVD 3 has a nice Split feature that is not found in other Roxio software. Still, Split is pretty easy in all other version, so it should not a factor to cut that 90 minute one into 2 discs
