Tell Us About Your Computer - Dxdiag.exe

Computer builders often use the same model number for an entire line of computers. Each computer in that line may have different options relating to the CPU (central processing unit), the GPU (graphics processing unit). the optical drives, the hard drives, the amount of memory, the operating system and more. I am too old to remember how to determine combinations and permutations (do they still teach that? ).

The capabilities of the computer determine how well programs run. It is often used for gaming but is also useful for determining computer performance for Roxio/Corel programs. There is a quick way of providing that information in one text file. You may be asked for it when someone tries to help diagnose a problem. That method is called dxdiag.exe and is a built-in program for all Windows Operating Systems.

Note that there is no personal information in that text file other than what you called your computer. You can block that from being seen. A proactive posting of the dxdiag file will help other users offer solutions to you problem

Here is a link to a good article by EA Arts (Gaming company). Ignore the part about reading the information (and the images) and just use the "Save all Information" tab so you will save the file and be able to attach it to your thread. Hint, save the file to your desktop so you can find it easily. Note that this works for all Versions of WINDOWS including Windows 8 and 10.

When you are making your reply to a user asking for that information, click on the "More Reply Options" at the bottom of the reply box. Type in the information you want to post with the dxdiag file. Select "Choose File" navigate to the file and click on it, the file name will appear next to the "Choose File" box. Click on the "Attach This File" just below "Choose File". The file will be uploaded to the site and will appear in your post when you complete your post. Note that you can add additional files such as a screen grab using the "Choose file" process.

DO NOT upload the contents for the dxdiag file; just the file itself.
