Recorder not recognised

I believe the drive is not being properly recognized by the OS. You should see more details about its burn capabilities in the "Disc Burning" item in the System Profiler hardware list.

I had a similar problem when my G4 iBook arrived from Apple. System Profiler did not report that it could burn discs. After reinstalling the OS the disc burning was enabled. You could try downloading and applying Apple's Combined System Updater on top of your existing OS. That might fix whatever is keeping the drive from being recognized.

The Apple Profiles Disc Burning shows the following:

MATSHITA PD-2 LF-D110:

Firmware Revision: A120

Interconnect: ATAPI

Burn Support: Yes (Vendor Supported)

Profile Path: /Library/DiscRecording/DeviceProfiles/PatchBurn-matshitapd2lfd110.drprofile

Cache: 2048 KB

Reads DVD: Yes

CD-Write:

DVD-Write: -RAM

Burn Underrun Protection CD: No

Burn Underrun Protection DVD: No

Write Strategies:

Media: No

I notice that it doesn't show anything for CD writing though I thought previously that I have been able to.

regards, Robert

Hmmm, I would try the latest OS Combo update and perhaps Patchburn to check if it's software related, but if that doesn't work you might have a faulty drive.

For comparison, here's what System Profiler says about my external drive under Disc Burning:

TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S162L:

Firmware Revision: LC02

Interconnect: FireWire

Burn Support: Yes (Vendor Supported)

Profile Path: /Library/DiscRecording/DeviceProfiles/LaCie.drprofile

Cache: 2048 KB

Reads DVD: Yes

CD-Write: -R, -RW

DVD-Write: -R, -RAM, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL

Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes

Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes

Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO

Media: No

How does Apple System Profiler describe that drive? Toast should recognize any drive that the OS recognizes as supporting CD or DVD burning.

Apple Profiler reports the recorder as :

MATSHITAPD-2 LF-D110:

Model: MATSHITAPD-2 LF-D110

Revision: A110

Serial Number:

Detachable Drive: No

Protocol: ATAPI

Unit Number: 0

Socket Type: Internal

Any advice would be useful.
