Can't burn bootable Solaris/Linux iso images

sldunix

Question

Hi Folks,

I've been trying on and off for a really long time to burn bootable Solaris and Linux CDs from iso images, never with any success. Most recently, I've tried with a solaris 9 iso image and the hardware and software shown below, and a CD-R CD. What I think happens is that the iso has two parts, the boot area and the regular data. It burns the boot area onto the non-boot part of the CD, then quits because it doesn't know what to do with the rest of the data. The command I used was "Copy>Burn Images". In Tools>Options>Data, I have the following settings:

Type: Disc at Once (DAO), Closed

Mode: Mode 1

File System: ISO +Joliet (106 character file names)

Just for the heck of it, in the DVD section, I set it to “I only need to use discs for one recording.” Also just for the heck of it, under Tools>Options>Data Archive, I set the Destination File Structure to “Copy file structure from my source selection”.

Should I be using a CD I can write to more than once? Should I be using a different Creator “Module” to do this? There’s a limit to how many CDs I want to waste trying to get this to work, or I’d keep trying different combos.

Here’s the OS and hardware I’m using:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 SP2

AMD Sempron 3000+ 789 MHz

384 MB RAM

TSSTcorp CDW/DVD TS-L462C

Toshiba MK4025GAS

Here's what I have for the Roxio software itself:

Again, are those of you this is working for using CD-RW disks?

Another big question: could the problem be that I have "Roxio Creator Plus - Dell Edition"? I'm not even sure if that corresponds to EMC 8, but didn't know where else to post this.

I tried this again with a different Solaris iso, same problem. It writes a small amount of data then quits. In this case, it wrote 76 MB. I'm willing to bet this is the boot info. I thought the same thing as those of you who replied- that I ought to be able to simply insert a disk, choose "burn image" and burn a bootable iso image, but no such luck. I'll try this again with a RedHat iso and see what happens, but I have a feeling I'm going to have the same problem. BTW, I can burn a non-bootable Solaris iso no problem.

The basic error message is:

There was a problem writing to the disc. You can try again by clicking the Retry button. You will need another blank disc ready.

Here's the "advanced" error message:

Sense: 02 ASC: 04 ASCQ: 08 (Command 00)

-------------------------------------------------------

Px.dll: 2.2.54.500

pxdrv.dll: 1.1.68.0

PxMas.dll: 2.2.54.500

PxSFS.DLL: 2.2.54.500

PxWave.dll: 2.2.54.500

pxwma.dll: 1.0.0.3

Thanks in Advance,

Sarah

To be honest, I've only ever written bootable CDs to CD-R and never tried with CD-RW but I never had any problems with it by using the Disc Copy method.

With the very low price these days of CD-R why not try it - I've found in general that RW discs are never that reliable anyway
