cmwolfson
Old MacBook running OS X 10.9. Burning was working fine, but now I get this message whenever I try to burn anything. Tried a variety of blank discs; trashed preferences and plists; reinstalled Toast 12 but nothing has helped so far.
theoldarchiver
It is possible, that the drive (hardware) is failing to recognise recordable discs as such. Software tweaking can't help with that. Maybe dirt (dust) is piling up inside the drive. Maybe the lens isn't as clean anymore. This can be cleaned, if you dare to take it apart a bit. Does the optical drive read (all kinds of) discs okay? If the drive has issues with DVD-R discs, does it burn / work well with CD-R discs? If the drive has issues with CD-R discs, does it burn / work well with DVD-R discs? If the drive had issues with rewritable -RW discs, does it burn / work well with recordable (but not rewritable) -R discs?
