Restoring Old Roxio Backup Dvd With Spanned Disks

Guff666

Question

Back in 2005, I backed up a photo archive onto multiple spanned DVDs using the then current PPC version of Toast. I now need to restore that archive on my Intel iMac running el Capitan.

Obviously, the Roxio Restore on the DVDs is no good and I don't use Toast anymore. Is there anything I can do?

Roxio Restore.app (1.0.5) is also part of newer versions of Toast, thus as Intel version. A copy is included inside the application package at: Toast Titanium.app/Contents/Resources/Roxio Restore.app . I haven't seen Roxio post this little app separately on a webpage for public download (I think they should), and I wouldn't do so without their permission obviously.

According to this old Knowledge Base article, you may alternatively restore the spanned files manually, using the “cat” (short for concatenate) command in Terminal, which ‘glues’ the parts together again.

On the PC versions, the Recovery program is on every disc. Likewise we can copy every file off of the discs without the program except the one that is split across 2 discs. That one is a gonner without the Recovery program - good news is that there is on One File split for every 2 discs.
