Black Bars Showing Up On Sides

I'm using the latest version of Toast. The video file is an H264 Blu-ray .m4v file created with Adobe Media Encoder (latest version). I also tried a video file created with Apple Compressor (also latest version) that ended with .264. They are 1920x1080 with a 2.35 letterbox. I've also tried it with a 2.39 aspect ratio letterbox. Running time is 90 minutes.

When I load the files into Toast and click on Edit I see that Toast is chopping off the sides of the video with black bars. It's not re-scaling the video as I can tell I'm losing picture on the sides. If I create a disc image or burn a BD disc the sides have black bars.

If I import the original ProRes mov file it doesn't cut the sides off with black bars, but I need to use the .m4v or .264 so that it will add the accompanying 5.1 .ac3 file.

What is causing this and how can I fix it? Thanks for helping.
