audio to videowave

Question

Had music on my hard drive - saved to a CD. Deleted off hard drive. Wanted to add some of the songs from CD to a videowave production, but songs are in "read only". When I uncheck "read only" and click "ignore" goes right back to "read only" Videowave tells me songs can't be edited. Can't bring up in Sound Editor - possibly change format. Anyway to undue my mistake. Thanks. MK

As far as I know, any file on CD is always marked read-only as you cannoy modify it directly on the CD.

Can you tell me, if you use Explorer, what do you see? Do you see the names of the files? If so, do they have suffix? Does each song name ends in ".wav"? Did you try copying a song first to the hard drive and then bring it up in Sound Editor?

OK, I am so happy. Went to Explorer - clicked on the drive the disc is in - got songs, titles, and Windows Media player symbol. While there, I clicked on copy, then pasted to a file folder on my desk top. Went to Sound Editor and I can now open it in sound Editor. Two questions - when I copy anything else from my computer to a CD, how do I make sure I don't get this problem again (Read Only). Second question - While I was in Sound Editor, I went to "save as". Then it asked if I wanted to "Save Project" or Save File? I am not real good with sound editor and not sure what that means. Do I need to save it in a different format (They are all wav right now). The "read only box" is no longer checked on the copies I just made . Have no idea what I am doing. I am so thankful to you. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated. MK

As malatekid suggested any files burned to a CD will always have a "Read Only" attribute and that cannot be changed on that CD. However anytime you save files by burning them to a CD and want to modify them or edit them, just copy the files back to some folder on your computer. Then go to that folder and check the properties of the files on the HD and delete the read only box for each file you want to edit or you can also change all of the files on that folder that have a read only attribute all at once.

Once that is done use the files from your HD to your program and you will be able to edit them now.

1) Any file on CD (or DVD) are always "read-only" file. That's how it is as you cannot modiy files on the disc.

2) Save Project -- saves the session data using the current name of the file, if it already exists. If the file name does not exist yet, it will ask you to supply a name. The file will be saved with the filename extension of dmse.

Save Project As -- if you want to save the current session data with a different name

At what stage do you get the "save as" prompt? Please describe.

Please provide steps (including the program that you use) of what you are doing.

How are you trying to add songs from CD to Videowave? Did you rip the songs first from CD to hard drive? From what application do you see the songs with "read only" attribute?

Thanks, I will try to remember how I did it. Copied a Music CD to my hard drive. While, cleaning up hard drive, copied songs back to a blank CD but not sure which program I used to do that. Most likely Sonic Record Now. Since I no longer have the original Disc, I put my copied backup CD into drive so I could use one of the songs. All I can do is play the CD. I tried copying the song back to my computer with Windows Media Player (no list comes up), and Roxio. Also will not let me bring directly from disc into videowave production. Says "song cannot be edited". So I opened up the CD, right clicked one song and went to properties. Under General tab it says - Type of file "Wave Sound" ; Opens with "Windows Media"; Attributes "Read Only" is checked. I unchecked this box, clicked on "ignore", but box still checked. I tried to bring the song up in sound Editor, thinking I could save it under a different format, but can't bring it up in Sound Editor. I don't know how I copied it into a read only. Not sure if this can be rectified. Just not sure how to copy so it doesn't go into "read only" file. Thanks again. MK
