OOPS! Should've done a little more research before posting. Looks like AVG free is not going away. It's just that V 7.1 will be replaced by V 7.5. Here's more info . . .

New Free Anti-Virus

GRISOFT is announcing a new version of the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. This new 7.5 version with improved performance and full compatibility with the latest Windows Vista version is available. Users that are using AVG Free 7.1 will be provided with a specific dialog, within the next few weeks, with the opportunity to choose the right option fulfilling their needs. AVG Free 7.1 version will be discontinued on 15th of Jan 2007.

In my defense, the popup announcing this development first thing this morning was VERY deceptive. The only option offered was to upgrade to a purchased version. There was no mention of a free upgrade . . .

Funny, I just read in Dr. Bombeck's column yesterday the exact same thing. It's only the old version that is goodbye. Very good free software too. And, works on Vista (7.5 does).

MS is coming out with their own anti virus/spyware suite called Beta One now. I'm testing it on my laptop and while it hasn't slowed down the system, it starts it's magic right at boot up at the worst time....while everything else is loading up. It doesn't even wait until all the startup programs finish loading. :)
