Blu-Ray Disc won't play on Sony or any other Blu-Ray player

I've been a big user of Mac and Toast for years. But never had to record a Blu-Ray disc. I went through the process as described in the user manual on Roxio Toast 19 Pro. Authored the menus, etc. I even tried several different codecs to make sure that wasn't the issue Used m2v for blu ray, H.264, but even though the disc shows a burned image on the disc and my mac can open the disc and it has the BDMV folder as well as the Certificate. It can't be read on my Sony Blu-Ray player, or any other player I've tried it on. 

I was curious that maybe my OWC Mercury Pro burner was the issue or maybe my Imation BD-R discs, so I copied a Blu-Ray disc that I know worked from another project, and the copy worked and plays fine. 

I was also wondering if Toast 19 can properly burn 5.1 audio from an .AC3 file?

What is the issue here? (I've looked through all the set up menus on the online manual and nothing appears)

I wanted to join in on this issue and here is the situation I am now facing:

I have been working on a large video project. My computer is an Apple Mac Pro, running the most recent version of its operating system (11.2). The video editing software I use is Final Cut Pro X (Version 10.5.1). After finishing the project, the file was exported in the .m4v format. I then used Roxio Toast 19 Pro to import the video file and put chapter markers on it. After this was complete, I tried to burn a disc. I am using an ASUS BW-16D1X-U burner. The size of the file created with Toast was approximately 27GB so I used a Verbatim Blu ray dual layer disc that holds 50GB. The disc appeared to be burned correctly. But I could not view it on either of two different Sony Blu Ray players. I don't get an error message on the window to indicate a disc is unreadable. But when I click on that icon, the player tries to play the disc but then just returns to the original screen.

After contacting the ASUS technical support, they have not had any reports of problems like this. I am currently trying to get the Roxio people to help. But, frankly, they failed me in the past so I'm not sure what to expect this time. I am now wondering if the issue is related to the Toast 19 Pro application or if it has to do with the Sony Blu ray players I am using.

For what it is worth, I burned the .m4v file onto a Blu-ray Disc and it was recognized and I could view the content with a Sony player. But, if I try to add chapter markers with Toast 19 Pro, I get the problem described above. This suggests it has to do with Toast application. 

If this cannot be resolved with Roxio, I am wondering if anyone has suggestions for an alternative to Toast 19 Pro?  I will attach a screen shot of a Toast 19 Pro window that shows where things were just before I clicked on the "Burn" button.

after using FCPX, you should prepare the BD with Compressor. BD will be prepared with compression H.264, and the final result is an image disk ready to be burned by Toast, without problems

Thank you for getting back to me. Unfortunately, I have tried to follow your advice but have not been successful. So, I am going to offer a detailed description of the steps I have followed and hope this will offer you an opportunity to help me find a solution.

As I mentioned in my first email, I am working on a large video project and am using Final Cut Pro X as the editing application. Having finished the editing, I followed your suggestion and sent the file to Compressor. I found that I had to download Compressor from the App store. After that, I noticed that there were three options when I tried to use Compressor:

1.     New Batch

2.     New iTunes Store Package

3.     New IMF Package

I chose New Batch. Compressor then displayed a window and I’ll attach a screen shot of this. Note the name of the file “Selected Golden Clips 1.” I double-clicked on this name and this file was loaded into Compressor. Next I clicked the “add” button for “Setting” and the window for this opened up. I am attaching a screen shot of this window.

Among the options was a set under “Create Blu-ray/AVCHD.” I chose this option: H.264 for Blu-ray. Your email said I should use the H.264 option to create what you call an “image disk.” Next I clicked on the “Start Batch” button and a progress window showed a small window in the upper right hand of the window. Once this was finished, a file was saved to an external folder and I will add a screen shot of the folder contents. The name of this file is: “Selected Golden Clips 1-H.264 for Blu-ray 264.”

You indicate that this would be an “image disk” that could be burned by Toast. However, when I tried to import this into Toast, it would not accept it. At this point, I am assuming that there are steps required that I did not follow and hope that you can offer a more detailed description of what I need to do.

I sincerely hope you can help me as this has been a long and frustrating search for an answer. Thank you.

One you have prepared your file with chapters (I hope you know how to do), you have to "send to...compressor" in FCPX (there is a suitable command). Compressor is automatically opened. You have to clic exactly on "create blu-ray", not only on one of the two items. There is another window with the movie up, and down the movie details with the audio and video options. Clicking on these details you get on the right side the ability to change titles size and so on. Once you have finished, you click on "send to batch" which after some minutes provides the image.

I appreciate your suggestions and am trying to make this work. Unfortunately, I am still having issues. So, let's start with what I believe you are advising and then I'll explain the outcome:

 

1. I did go back and put chapter markers in the original material. I had not done that before because I had assumed this could be done within Toast 19 Pro. From what you have said, I still need to do this first in FCPX.

2. I opened up Compressor and clicked on the "add" button so that the "settings" window would open. Following your instructions, I clicked on "create blu-ray" and that resulted in a window having the two sub-settings showing for the imported file. I will attach a screen shot showing this window.

3. You next said that was another window to show details for the audio and video options. I am not sure what you are referring to. On the upper right of the Compressor window is an icon that brings up windows with details for each of the subcategories under the "create blu-ray" option in settings. You said this would make it possible to change titles size and so on. But I thought this would be done within the Toast application. Can you clarify this?

4. Since I had already put chapter markers in the video file, I decided to click on "send to batch."

5. The result was a failure and I am including a screen shot to show this. I am hoping you can explain what I am still doing wrong. I have been reading the online manual but am still not able to find specific information related to the problem here. Perhaps you could direct me to the manual section you think is relevant.

more look at the bottom line: during authoring your BD it was not able to create the menu. BDs require menu, like DVDs. To create a basic menu: this operation is available in compressor, by clicking on the bar "selected golden clips 5" a window on the right side should appear.

From your reply, I am concluding that our exchange has been too difficult for you. So I will not be bothering further with this. Instead, I am contacting Corel directly to see if this can be resolved. You state that I am complicating what is very simple. You might be right. But I thought the simple part would be to just import my video file into Toast, add chapter markers, and then burn a disc. From what you have advised, I might be mistaken. If so, then I will hope that Corel will clear this up. Frankly, the path I have taken, based on your suggestions, is much more complicated than what I had expected. You are right, of course, it is difficult trying to give instructions in this way. That is why I tried to be as specific as I could about what was happening. It might be that this is not helpful. But, since we cannot have a person-to-person call on this topic, I don't know what else to try. Again, thank you for the effort you have made.

I am having the exact same problems.  After numerous chats with Corel on line, nobody can give me an answer as to why my BluRay will not play an any of my BluRay machines.  I finally gave up and asked for my money back.  I don't know why such a simple task doesn't work.  

 

This is what my question to them was.   

I have used Toast for 4 previous versions. I just purchased 19 Pro. I have made 3 attempts to make a BluRay. I've done everything by the book. Each time it is finished, I put it in three different blu ray players and when I select the disc in the BluRay machine home screen, it goes black, and back to the Blu Ray machine home screen. My video does not appear. Can you please tell me what is going on?

I have taken the same path you have. I worked with the Toast technical folks for nearly an entire month and nothing they suggested would work. Frankly, I grew very disgusted with their approach. Besides getting useless suggestions, they seemed unwilling to respond to what I would send back to them as a result of trying what they recommended. I provided detailed written descriptions and screen shots. But their response was simply more unhelpful suggestions. Eventually, since I was using Apple's Final Cut Pro X, I contacted their technical support and they helped me figure out how to burn Blu-ray Discs with chapter markers. The result is not as elegant as I had hoped with Toast but at least it works. It is really too bad that Apple discontinued IDVD as that truly worked in the past. I have found no other option that seems capable of replicating what I could do before with that application. Frankly, I think Corel should be called out for selling a product with functionality that neither works, nor can be "fixed" by their own technical people. I have posted reviews everywhere I can to alert consumers about this. And, of course, I requested and got my money back. But this comes after chewing up multiple Blu-ray Discs in the process of discovering that the Toast "experts" could not help me solve this problem. For what it is worth, I went through this exact situation in 2020 with Toast 18 and was told they would be issuing a new version that would work. Well, Toast 19 Pro arrived and we are in the same place. While I realize that a lot of the world has turned to media accessed in ways other than DVDs, there still is a need for this in many instances. If you happen to be using the same Apple application I am for video editing, let me know and I'll tell you what they did to help me burn blu-ray disks with chapter markers.

Here is a description of what Apple recommended. These were the steps that were to guide me through Final Cut Pro X. At the end of this, I will add just a couple more comments you should consider:

 

Unfortunately, when I tried to burn a Blu-ray disc from Toast, it would not play. This set in motion an extended set of email exchanges with the Toast technicians but we never found a solution that would work. So, I next turned to Apple to get advice on how to burn a Blu-ray disc from Final Cut Pro X. Here are the steps that I was eventually told to take—and it worked:

 

1.     From within Final Cut Pro X, go to the File pull-down menu and find the Share option. 

2.     Click on Share and look for Blu-ray/AVCHD and choose that one.

3.     A window labeled Blu-ray/AVCD window will open.

4.     Choose “Info” and information for the title, description, and tags.

5.     Choose “Settings” There several options to address:

a.     Output Device (Choose ASUS BW-16D1X-U)

b.     Layers: Automatic

c.     Build type (grayed out)

d.     Disc template (I chose “Black”)

e.     Title: (I put in “Our Golden Anniversary-2021”)

f.      Volume name: (I put in Golden Anniversary-Blu-ray)

g.     Color Space: Standard-Rec.709

h.     When disc loads: Show Menu

i.      Markers (unchecked)

j.      Loop: (unchecked)

k.     Background: (didn’t use)

l.      Logo Image: (didn’t use)

m.   Title Image: (I used the Introduction Title.jpg file)

n.     Built in captions: (none)

 

The next step was to click on the “Share” button. You can monitor the progress by clicking on the upper-left image to the right of the “key” image. Once the disc is burned, it will eject from the burner.

Additional Comments:

While the advice I got from Apple did "work," it was not without problems. 

I tried once more to get assistance from the company that sells Toast 19 Pro but got back more useless suggestions and no responses that indicated they had even read my prior messages. So, I just decided to request a refund. Fortunately, this all took place within the 30-day window that allows for a refund. And I got it. 

Unfortunately, despite all the assistance I received from Apple technical support, we were unable to burn a disc as a Blu-ray file as it was originally created. If a Blu-ray version of the material was burned to a disc, it would pixilate toward the end. Also, the chapter markers never allowed for accurate navigation. If a person chose a certain year in the video file, you never saw the actual number of the year appear—only the contents for that year. Finally, even if you just burned the entire file in the .m4v format, the image would break up after about two hours of viewing.

The final outcome was to break the original file into two files and put each on a Blu-ray disc.  Frankly, it would be hard to overstate how frustrating this whole process was when it came to burning discs.

It turned out that an addendum needed to be added to this section. I had burned DVDs with each having the two files mentioned above. However, people began to realize that either they lacked a Blu-ray DVD player that would recognize the disc or else it could be recognized but that the first file would stop at some point before it was finished. The only solution was for them to actually find a Sony Blu-Ray player so they could view the video. Sending such a large file was not feasible with YouTube. In the future I might just mail a large capacity thumbnail drive with the material on it.

To sum up: Toast sucks. Apple helped but could not explain why a 2.5 hour video could not be exported without problems. And further, their advice on the use of chapter markers fell short because, when the video was played, the chapter markers did not allow for flawless navigation. This is truly a sad situation because I cannot find any other application that would allow me to create the kind of "wrap-around" functionality I once had when using iDVD. Surely there has to be a market for its successor, don't you think?

Thank you very much for your instructions. I had written to technical support and they managed to help me burn a blu-ray project without any issues. The only drawback is that you have to use the classic templates, not the updated ones. I wish I would have known this from the beginning, it would have saved me so much frustration and discs!  

Here are the instructions. 

With regards to your concern, please check the below steps to burn a 
DVD using Blu-ray Plug-in:

1. Select Burn option in your Toast 19 home page.



2. Then, select Blu-ray Disc option under "Burn Videos"



3. Then, click on "Switch to classic".



4. Please select the type as BD at the bottom of the page as shown in the picture and click on Burn button to burn the file.
