Hello there can anyone please advise. I can no longer burn a cd. It's as if Roxio has stopped communicating with the dvd rom. After the blank disc has spun up the ok button is still blanked out. I have used the repair option but still the same. Any advce would be much appreciated

Hello Mac, are there supposed to be pictures in those huge gaps in your message?  If so, I can't see any.

There's not much info there to work on.   Was the software burning CDs previously for you and it has now stopped, or have you never been able to burn CDs since you installed the software?   If it used to work, what have you changed on your computer?

What type of CD are you trying to burn?  Data, Audio, from Disk Image?

Is the CD you have inserted unchanged after your attempts, or is it shown as no longer blank?

What operating system are you using, and what make/model of burner?

Hi Brendon my apologies if i replied to wrong place. As to your Questions. The software as always been mine and i have always been able to burn cd's. my OS is windows 202h which is the latest version. I only found out on Tuesday that I couldn't burn cd's and the only change to my laptop is having a solid state hard drive fitted. The burner is a Slimetype DVD A DA8A6DH.

Regards,

Mac

Hi Mac,

No problem, glad we've got you here now.    Okay, I was trying to find out if you couldn't burn a particular type of CD - e.g. music or data - in case some particular part of the software had failed.  I'm guessing that you can't burn any type. Please correct me if that's wrong.

Migrating your system from a rotary drive to an SSD shouldn't break this, but I'm thinking that perhaps you might have lost the writing system that Roxio uses.    To clarify, Windows has its own read/write system for optical discs and Roxio software inserts a filter in there to hook up to the Windows system.    I need you to check both of those for me if you can.

The first is easy.  Please insert a CD with data on it and see if you can Open it in Windows Explorer.  If it's a music CD, see if you can play it in your usual manner.     If that works, the Windows system and the drive are both okay.

Next, run CD & DVD Burning 2, go to Get Disc Information, and see if the display shows you the sort of information shown below about the drive, Selected Drive, Inserted disc, and sessions and tracks.     Please come back and let me know the results so far.

A final check involves using REGEDIT.EXE and peeping at the contents of a registry key.   This can be quite daunting if you're not familiar with regedit, so please let me know if you're familiar with it or not and I can give more instructions if needed to walk you through that one.

Regards, Brendon

Hi Brendon, copy disc and data disc are both working. i couldn't check dvd because i don't have any material, but earlier on today in device manager i deleted the dvd driver and restarted the laptop and it actually worked for one disc then failed when i tried a second. i am getting all the info as per picture, and i'm afraid you will have to walk me through regedit if it comes to that.by the way how is it down under. i remember now you helped me a few years ago.

mac

Hi Brendon I thought i'd just check roxio again and to my surprise  it's working i have burnt 3 audio discs in a row. please don't ask how this as happened because i have no idea. i just hope it's not an  intermittent fault  so what do think do we need to check regedit to make sure?

Hi Mac,

I hope it's not an intermittent too, since they're a real cow to diagnose even when you're in the same room as the machine.

The registry check is aimed at making sure the Roxio PxHelp filter is installed, and it must be if you're writing now so no point in checking.   Truthfully, the clues from your earlier messages are pointing in all directions so I have no idea what went wrong for a while there.   Fingers crossed it doesn't happen again.

Down under we stamped out the virus in country, but every now and then we get leaks at the border which we need to jump on quickly.  Vaccines are starting to arrive, but it will be midyear before we can get to start on the general population.  Once everyone's done we can open the border again.

Stay safe, Brendon

Hi Brendon I was impressed at what your government did right from the start if only our government had done the same we wouldn't have such a massive death toll. they tried to find a middle path between the economy and lockdown. there isn't any middle path lockdown is the only answer until everyone is vaccinated which thank god over 19 and a half have been vaccinated. anyway my friend thanks again for your input. stay safe.

best regards,

mac

Hi Brendon, Here we go again!!!! I have lost audio in Roxio, it was working fine yesterday. I have restarted laptop and run the windows audio troubleshooter. I have checked it in windows player, and I also have a program called Virtual DJ and it's working fine in both, so I run the Roxio repair tool but still no audio. I am starting to think that my Roxio program has become corrupted considering the problem I also had with the audio burn. Any advice would be great my friend

Regards,

Mac.

Hello Mac,

Not sure what's happening on your computer - you had about three huge pages worth of blank space after your message, too.

What do you mean by 'lost audio in Roxio'?   The program won't preview music you put into it?  It writes CDs that have no music on them?  The sound editor doesn't show a signal?   It shows a signal but won't play it?   Please describe the exact problem.

Your previous problem "can't burn music CDs" came right before we could get into it.   That doesn't sound like program corruption because corruption doesn't just fix itself.   It sounds more like the machine is unstable or other programs are interfering.

I'd suggest you don't try any more big interventions until we work out what's happening.   Easy CD & DVD Burning 2 allows a limited number of re-installs, so uninstalling/reinstalling is considered the nuclear option.   'Repairs' are free.

Give me more clues, my friend.

Hi again Brendon I'll take your questions one by one if I may. Firstly I don't know anything about sound editor because i have never used it. Basically what is happening is there is no sound when i try to play any of my playlists. As to there being a conflict with another program i find that hard to believe as there are no new  programs installed. The only thing that as been installed apart from the daily security updates was a windows 10 preview update, apart from that nothing.. Why i said that Roxio might be corrupt is that you mentioned previously that Roxio uses a hook to utilise the windows audio system, and once again it's a problem with audio. Anyway you can breathe easy my friend i have not re-installed yet, i have only used the repair option. The other problem is i'm not that tech minded i know how to do the basics. I did consider re-installing but decided to run it past you first. as to there being three blank pages i have absolutely no idea, i just typed and sent. hope this one comes through ok.

best regards,

mac

Sorry Mac, that leaves me with more questions than answers.

-what are your playlists, and what program in Easy DVD & CD Burning 2 are you trying to use to play them?

Are you having problems with your Internet connection? [that or system instability are the only reasons I can think for only half a reply showing]

Mac,

-what are your playlists, and what program in Easy DVD & CD Burning 2 are you trying to use to play them?

Are the playlists groups of song files you are feeding to some player, or are they special list files such as M3U files or something similar see LINK  which contain music filenames and locations, and which you feed to some sort of player which then goes and gets the files and plays them?

What program in the Roxio suite are you using as a player?

the playlist are mainly mp3 files which i created in music disc creator, which i then save in my music folder. when i want to play them i open music disc creator and play them..that's all i can tell you, i just assumed that Roxio had it's own media player.

hi brendon done some exploring mp3 files are playing in sound editor. i checked to see what player was being used but there was no option so i presume it's windows media player

( that's the only one i have) i also added the same track to music disc creator the bar travelled across as though playing but still no sound. hope this helps,

mac

Hi Mac,

Thanks for your answers.   The filter (PxHelp) I mentioned in an earlier message enables disc I/O, and is not involved with audio.

Your Roxio Sound Editor uses its own output routines, and seems to be okay.

The Music Disk Creator uses a Sonic Media Player, RxSMPlayer, and it seems that is either broken or being interfered with by something in your machine.   Did you change anything at all prior to that happening?

Hi Brendon while i was waiting i  reinstalled Roxio but still the same, so wouldn't that have corrected the problem if it was a Roxio issue. If by doing that we have ruled out an issue with Roxio, then is it as you  said a conflict, but i can't think of any changes i have made. As i have said i haven't installed any new programs. So if it is a conflict issue where do we go from here.

Hello Mac,

I've been giving this one a lot of thought, but I'm limited by not being able to put the machine on my bench and poke a stick at it.    Distance doesn't help diagnosis.

I was about to suggest that perhaps the only thing left is to do a clean uninstall/reinstall of the Roxio software to ensure there's nothing broken inside it, but you've anticipated that and done it already.

So it doesn't seem to be in the Roxio software.   It's unlikely to be an issue with Windows 10 - I'm running it in version 20H2 up to date, and it's fine there.      What about your anti-virus?  Can you disable it or try a different one?   I've really run out of ideas.  :(

Hi Brendon,

I am running the same OS as well. I think there is only two options left. Take it to the PC hospital or do a complete reinstall of windows and then add the programs one by one, but that will take forever. NIGHTMARE🤬. Maybe one of the programs updated in the background and Roxio as taken a dislike to it.  Anyway i'm not sure poking a stick at it is the right way to go ( joking) thanks for all your input. good to talk to you again. I think i'll take it to Adam first and let him poke a stick at it. LOL.

Best regards,

Mac

Happy news!   Mac went off investigating unusual Windows settings, and sent back this message:

" windows folder protection was blocking access to my music folders so I've allowed it and all is good. "

It seems that Windows 10 had set folder protection to On for his music folders, denying access to the player, RxSMPlayer.  To remove the block you have to go to Settings > Virus & threat protection > Ransomware protection and then click a link "Manage ransomware protection".  Once there, locate and click a link "Allow an app through Controlled folder access" > "Add an allowed app"  and then find and allow your recently blocked app.

"Manage ransomware protection" ? It reminds me of some plans in The Hitchhiker's Guide, which were "on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard.' "     Windows 10 strikes again!

Anyway, that's where the setting is if you run into this problem.   Thanks for your detective work on this, Mac. :)

Brendon
