Initial Thoughts Review on Toast 20

Recommended Posts

Toast 20 has some new features like custom menus so here's some screenshots and videos of this feature and other review info.

Here's a screenshot of the menu designer. you can select the items and move them on the screen.

What I've found so far:

It can convert files to .mkv but you can’t burn .mkv (this was no surprise)

Loaded a 864mb .mp4 file and Toast says it’s 4.79GB (same old issue)  It’s H.264/AVC, 720x480, 29.97fps Audio: AAC

Toast should accept it and have the correct size!

Loaded a 1.75GB .m2ts file and it says it’s only 495MB.

Loaded a 710mb . H.264/AVC, 1920x1080, 29.97 fps .mov file and it says it’s 1.36GB. It was recorded at 4mb/s and toast is bumping it to 8mbs even though I have NEVER reencode selected.  If I manually decrease the bit rate in the customize settings down to the avg bitrate of the file according to MediaInfo.app, the file size goes down.  They shouldn’t have any effect if ReEncode NEVER is selected.

UPDATE:

Burn to Disc Image

Even though I said reencode never,  it went thru a reencode step and that took about 30 seconds, then multiplex and then burn. The whole process took about 2 minutes for 2GB final result on bluRay disc image.

Creating Custom Menu and Burning BluRay

The Guide on creating a custom menu needs some work but I think I have it figured out.  You can add a video with sound or an image once you click on the background editor button.  For a video you can select a 30 second segment in the video you select and it will loop when it's played.  I haven't tried it in "Classic Mode" yet because I don't think you can do custom menus in Classic. I'll update this post after the current burn to disc with a custom menu is finished.  It's been 8 minutes and it's only 57% thru the burn.

For anyone that wants to cruise thru the help guide here's the link:

Simple Custom Menu with 3 videos and a 30 second video clip with audio in the background

NOTE: custom menus CANNOT be used in classic mode so no control over encoding.

I didn't select a 16x9 background video or it would have covered the whole window. Also, I didn't play with the button styles or text colors. This was just a quick video to show a basic custom menu.

What I like so far:

1- Creating custom menus. This looks like a great addition to the software and it has very good editing capabilities from what I've seen so far.

2- Looks like Corel fixed the problem in Classic Mode where you clicked on Edit one of the video's and it would NOT display the video so you could accurately set beginning/end of the clip.  I just tested it on .mp4, .mov and .m2ts and they all show the videos now. About Time it got fixed!

What I don't like so far:

1- Can't create custom menus in Classic Mode where we can better control the burning process

2- When you load a video, the filesize isn't showing the file's actual size based on the bit rate and there's no control over the bit rate.

3- It seems in "New Mode" it wants to encode everything and it took 21 minutes to burn a 3.8GB file to a toast disc image

Is the Upgrade worth the $$?

It seems to me that Corel must have actually hired someone to work on Toast that knows something about creating video discs because the program seems much smoother in it's operation than any other version since Corel destroyed Toast after they bought Roxio.

I will continue to learn about the "new mode" when I need custom menus, otherwise I'll keep using "Classic Mode" where I can have more control.  If Corel would allow custom menu import into Classic Mode , THAT WOULD BE GREAT, OKAY!

Here's a picture to highlight the file size issue.

This file was taken right off a BluRay that Toast 19 made and it's only 2.5GB in size, but look at how big Toast 20 says it is.

UPDATE: It seems that any time you add a menu in the NEW Layout, it adds about 4gb to the file size.

CRASH! I HAVE 64GB RAM AND A 6 CORE I5 2019 IMAC 27" COMPUTER RUNNING BIG SUR.

The file I was trying to burn to a bluray disc image was the same file shown in the picture in the previous post. It got to 40% within 1 minute then the other 29 minutes it just crawled until it crashed.  Not feeling so good about this new version now.  I'll test the same file in Classic Mode and see what I get.

UPDATE: I just dropped the same file in classic mode with a menu and it multiplexed and burned it to a blu ray disc image in less than a minute! Also, In the "New Mode" If you have add a menu, any menu, it adds 5gb to the file size bar.  I removed the custom menu I had and burned the 2.5gb file to a disc image and it multiplexed and burned in less than a minute just like classic mode.  CONCLUSION:  the "New Mode" menu system is a killer during the encode burn process. I do expect that it does have to encode for the menu, but so did Classic mode and it did the menu and the file in less than 1 minute.

SUGGESTIONS FOR PROGRAM IMPROVEMENTS:

1- Fix the menu system in the NEW INTERFACE so it doesn't add 4GB to the file size (and if the menu actually takes 4GB, somethings wrong!)

2- Allow Us to select if we want to re-encode or not with the same settings options as the Classic Interface has.

3- Allow us to design a menu and then save it and import it into Classic mode, or put the design engine in Classic mode as well.

Thanks for your first impressions!

Is the Blu-Ray "plug-in" always the same as the previous releases?

TIA

PS: They claim Big Sur compatibility, but in a few days Monterey should be out!

If you have the Pro version you can enable bluray burning. I don't know if it's a seperate plugin any more or if it's part of the main code that is activated.

As for Monterey, I'm sure they''ll update it for compatibility.  I'm not going to jump on Monterey because being an early adopter of Big Sur drove me crazy with issues.

If you do decide to upgrade,  I found a code to save and extra 20% on the upgrade:   20ROXIOSAVE

Hello all,

I am new here but hope I can get some wonderful tips. I have been looking far and wide for a Blu-Ray burning program that allows for custom menus and additional features like director commentary, and an intro video that plays before the main menu. I just reluctantly purchased Toast 20 Pro in hopes that it might have these features. I have played with it enough to "kind of" get the idea of changing the menus to my liking, but I have plenty of questions I fear won't be answered in their help files.

(1) They mention in the sales pitch that you can have an intro video play before the menu comes up, but for the life of me I can't see how to do that.

(2) When I change the background and such on the menu page, I don't see an option for a single video to be displayed with a thumbnail. I can only seem to choose an option with 2 thumbnails. I also don't see how to remove the text (they say to choose a theme without test, but there aren't any) and I don't see how to have no thumbnails at all. Just text. Additionally, I don't see how to make the text (if it's a video name) act as a button. It just seems to be text.

(3) And finally (for now) I don't see any way to add extras like subtitles, additional  audio tracks, or audio formats.

I know this is a lot to ask. Any help along these lines would be wonderful. I like to think I can figure this stuff out, but so far I am struggling and the website doesn't have a downloadable user guide as of yet. I fear if it were anything like the user guide for the previous version, it would not cover any of this anyway. It looks like a nice program, but they leave you in the cold as far as instructions are concerned.

Thank you!

Pat

Hi Pat, I don't work for Roxio but I'll try and help as much as I can.

1- You'll need to do this ALL in NEW LAYOUT and I seem to remember where I was able to add a video by dragging it to the left of the little menu icon.  I haven't really played with this feature but when I do, I'll post about it.  (Just Tried it.. DIDN"T WORK)

2- The video thumbnails will play the video that is for that added file. I'm not sure what you're looking for on this one.  As for removing text, have you selected it and then hit the delete key? I don't know if that will work either (DIDN"T WORK EITHER).  I've posted plenty of "pissed off owners of Corel Roxio Toast" but please remember, this is the first version they have released with custom menus and I'm sure they won't put it thru the paces like the users will.

3- As for subtitles, additional audio etc, you're looking for features that used to exist in DVD Studio from Apple and other higher end programs.  If these capabilities exist, I haven't found them yet but then again, I only got the program upgrade yesterday.

Hello Matt,

I REALLY appreciate the time you took to answer all my queries. Like you, I just got the program yesterday, so it's all a matter of trial and error for now.

I had hoped you could add an intro video (as mentioned in their advertisement) by dragging it in before the menu icon, but as you found out, that doesn't work. Same goes for removing the text. Some bizarre message appears that makes no sense. As far as the video thumbnails go, I just didn't see a way to only have one thumbnail in the menu. 2 seems to be the minimum, but if you are only adding one video that seems odd. I imagine I'm just going about it incorrectly. I am selecting a the "menu template designer" in the edit mode. There you can select columns and rows, but you can't seem to select anything that just has one icon for a video.

As for the subtitles and other  audio tracks, I do indeed need those, but perhaps not as often. I might be able to get things done without it.

It is a frustrating program to work with. It's certainly vastly improved over previous versions, but the help provided is awful.

Thanks again for your quick response. If you have any other pointers I will surely be thrilled to see them here.

Has anyone tried "Use Fit-to-DV video compression" when creating DVD Videos with Toast 20 Pro?  Hasn't worked for me since Toast 11.  I have to go to an old computer and use Toast 11 for compression to work.  Hoping that is fixed in version 20. Thanks.

The Fit to video used to work wonderfully long ago, but has been pretty sketchy for a while. I haven't tried it yet with the new version, but will report back when I have time to check it out.

Does anyone know where to get the user guide for 20 Pro? The links don't work for me.

And how anyone yet figured out how to have an intro video that comes before the menu? It's listed as a feature, but no clue how to make it happen.

Thank you.

Pat

Hello folks,

After purchasing Toast 20 Pro a few weeks ago, I find I am very disappointed. First off there has not been a user guide available for this version, but I was told there would be a few weeks ago. There are features in the 20 Pro version that the instructions for other versions do not cover.

My main issue however is trying to create a menu with an intro video, which is touted in the advertisement. I have written to support several times. I now have found that it does indeed exist for DVD burning, but not for Blu-Ray. I am shocked that this feature doesn't exist for Blu-Rays, and can't imagine why it is excluded. Does ANYONE know of a work around?

Thank you,

Pat

Hi guys,

Does anyone know how to contact support at Roxio without going through the whole ticket support thing? I just get the distinct impression they are fobbing me off every time. All I want is what I purchased from the online store.

Hey Stuart,

I have had luck ONLY with the ticket thing, and by "luck" I mean I get a reply. But after many emails, I have never gotten a reply that actually addresses my question. Only links to "helpful hints."

Sorry to report the same problem here.

Did you get a Serial number for V20? I bought the download version and had no issues. Sorry you got V19.

Hello folks,

I am super frustrated with this app so far. Mostly because of zero help from an actual user guide. I have been an editor for 30 years, but I can't seem to make any headway with this program.

My main desire was to make a intro video before the menu. When you are editing the menu, there is an "intro" button, but clicking on it just tells you there is no intro video. So how do you add one? On the DVD menu there's a drop zone, but not on the Blu-Ray menu even though they have this curious non-working button.

Also I don't see any way to have no preview to the video on screen in the menu. The more videos I add, the more previews I get. Even when creating a menu without previews.

And chapters don't seem to get their own menu page. They are just added to the menu for that video. Is this the only way this works?

Sorry for the back to basics questions. I just can't believe how frustrating this is after 3 weeks and no help files for version 20 Pro.

SNIP

Well I've known all along since Corel bought ROXIO that their customer service SUCKS and since they seem to have the only "BluRay creation" program that you can stick a .m2ts file in and not have it spend hours encoding it, I'm stuck and keep paying the ransom.  When will I learn? When will someone make a program and have customer service that actually listens and responds?

I hear you Matt. It's a nightmare.

I made a few throw away Blu-Rays today just trying to see how it works. Awful so far. And zero help, or even directions makes it much worse.

What other programs have you tried? The main issues I have is with the menu design. Just makes no sense to me...
