Limited Lightscribe funtionality

Young

Question

It seems that there are 2 separate CD/DVD labelling applications.

1. Label Creator (with associated Express Labeler) which can be accessed from Home>Applications.

2. Then there is also Roxio Express Labeler which can be accessed from Home>Tools>Laser Label Disc. (Roxio Express Labeler is actually a basic version of Surething CD/DVD Labeler)

Is there no way to add my own background image for Lightscribe disc printing using Label Creator? Using my own background is ok for normal disc printing but with lightscribe it seems i am only given 2 choices of styles to choose from. And if i add my own background image, it comes out all dark.

The 2nd application Roxio Express Labeler seems to be able to lightscribe my own background without a problem.

I'm also puzzled why Roxio uses 2 applications and decide to hide the latter under Home>Tools

I've earlier downloaded SureThing 4SE for free and been using it.

I'm just surprised that the Disc Labeler that comes with Roxio always give me very dark (black) background when i choose lightscribe and use my own background. Wonder if there's anything amiss or i've not clicked certain function. Add background image and select Lightscribe in the Print dialogue box. That's all isn't it? The preview is black and the burning result is too. It can't be the contrast of the image that I've selected coz these images work well with Surething 4SE and they also work well with the other lightscribe labeler (Express Labeler 3) that comes with Roxio.

Oh well maybe i'll just stick to Surething then.

Label Creator 9 works fine for me. As Steve points out, do not select the Lightscribe 'style' as it is text only. Choose ANY of the other one or create your own. When ready to burn, then just select Lightscribe as the 'printer'.

When creating a lightscribe label use items with large contrasts. Shades of gray will work, but don't burn very dark. The contrast utility at the Lightscribe site does work within Label Creator 'print' dialog. It takes some experimenting to learn how to design good labels for lightscribe buring.

I agree that most of the Lightscribe labels I have made come out quite dark, so I don't use that method any more for making labels. But Steve has, I think, the best idea. Go the Lightscribe's website and download their free program and the updates for their hardware and software and download also all the extra templates they offer.

I will be trying out some of their colored discs just to see how they look. Hopefully they will come out looking better than the old dark ones I have experienced.

Instead of using the lightscribe templates, chose any template you want and then add what you want. When you go to burn simply select lightscribe as the printer.

Many people have complained about Disc Labeler and I know that the Surething labeler seems to be better BUT for full functionality, you have to upgrade it - more money. I don't think it is hidden since many people use the drop down lists on the left to get to all the functional programs (including he assistants). Note that both of the programs there are the "lite" versions.

BTW, you can go to the lightscribe web site and download the latest drivers (if you haven't) and download a bunch of free templates. I haven't looked lately but I bet that there are some Holiday ones there.

I just went to the site and found this:

NEW: COLOR CD-R MEDIA

Just in time for holiday projects! Buy Verbatim 25-packs of LightScribe color media at all Best BuyTM and OfficeMaxTM stores. Each pack includes five red, green, blue, yellow, and orange discs.
