CD's are not recognised in the DVD-RW drive.

budgie03

Question

Since installing Roxio, for some reason, CD's are not recognised in my D Drive. THis is a DVD-RW drive. DVD's are recognised ok; and video DVD's will playback as well. Using Roxio, DVD's are copied without any trouble at all. So the drive is writing DVD's correctly. But CD's put into this drive are not recognised at all. None of my music CD's will play in this drive. It is also infuriating because as this is the only write drive I have. I cannot copy my music to a CD any more.

Normally when everything worked ok, putting a disk in the D Drive would activate CHOICE. A dialog appearing that asked me to select which 'software' I wanted to use. Such as REALPLAYER, WINDOWS MEDIA, ROXIO, etc. But this dialog does not appear at all now. Inserting a CD in the D Drive does nothing.

If I open up Windows Explorer and then right click the D Drive. And then AUTOPLAY; there is the option provided "Prompt me for each option you want to use". This is checked and used to function correctly. But now it doesn't.

Please advise if you can.

Please give me step by step instruction I am 79 years of age and not too expert in this technology.

Most grateful, Gordonj

Given that scenario, I would try to uninstall the device. I don't know the system you have but in XP Prof, click the Start button, right click on My Computer, select Manage. A window pops up. Select Device Manager, and expand DVD/CD-ROM drives. If your burner name is showing there, right click on that name and choose Uninstall (be extra careful to select only the burner) . It may ask you to reboot in which case go ahead. If it doesn't, then just reboot anyway.

Turn on the PC. The system should now attempt rto ecognize and reinstall your burner. A popup message should show up in the system tray providing info regarding the recognition of the burner. Hopefully all goes well. Try putting a CD on it and see what happens.

Please let us know how it goes.

First, I would try Malatekid's suggestion to remove the DVD drive and re-boot and see if that helps. If not you might try rolling back the driver of the drive to see if that helps. The attached screen is from Win XP (Home) with SP2. However, if you just recently updated the driver or firmware for the drive I would NOT do a roll back.

Another screen shows (I think) The "choice" screen you were talking about that allowed you to pick a function when you inserted some media in the drive---???
