file tagging

Dave162

Question

I have shut off the option for file tagging in Media Manager, however, files that have already been tagged remain tagged. I have transferred some file to another computer that does not have MC9 installed and the files are still tagged in that computer. HOW DO I REMOVE THE TAGS ASSOCIATED WITH FILES???

Hi Dave,

This thing (Media Manager) uses the functionality of NTFS file system, called Alternate Data Streams (ADS), for storing tag data. You need special utility to see and manage these. I use "ADS Locator" to see ADS streams, and "Streams" command-line utility from sysinternals.com to delete them. You can find more if you search Google or Wikipedia for "Alternate Data Streams".

Personally, I do not select "Media Manager" and some other related components (i.e. Digital Home or something like that) at all when I install EMC. I do not like this type of functionality and if I tell everything what I think about it, I think my message will be deleted. In addition, previous version of it (in EMC8) was changing dates of all files for which it was adding tags. I do not know whether they fixed this or not because as I said since then I never install it.

Regards,

Stas
