Convert PAL DVD to NTSC DVD Format

I honestly doubt if a PAL>NTSC conversion will be easy.

The problem is that the European TV system uses 625 line and 25 frames per sec , whereas the US TV system is 525 line at 30 frames per sec. (PAL and NTSC btw are NOT television standards per se - they're the colour system used)

The reason for the different frame rate btw is down to historical reasons - if anyone REALLY wants to know why, I'll tell them :)

The best way probably would be to rip the original PAL to the computer (the line and frame structure are different anyway) and from that to re-encode to the NTSC format

I took the same 92 minute PAL clip and used DC to copy to my hard drive in mpeg. That worked. In the past I tried copying to the hard drive then taking the vob files into Videowave and from there, into MyDVD but that did not work either. At the time, I had not thought of copying as an mpeg. This step did take longer than I had expected and the 92 minute PAL movie took a bit more than 92 minutes to complete.

I had looked into VobBlanker but was not successful using that tool either. There are, supposedly, PAL to NTSC converters out there but I don't do this enough to pay for one.

One final thought if using EMC8 is DivxtoDVD which might work after copying to your hard drive then from the hard drive into DivxtoDVD which should convert to NTSC. I no longer have EMC8 so I couldn't test this myself.

I read all this with interest. I have a .dmsm made with EMC8 and would like to burn it to two discs, one in NTSC format for here in North America, and the other in PAL to send to Europe.

Is this possible? If so how? Does it involve using the "Output As" button?

I have the NTSC version just fine. Every time I attempt to make the PAL version when I test it in my regular DVD player - hoping to get an error message "prohibited wrong region" - the thing plays perfectly.

Maybe I should be trying Disc Copier in the reverse direction. thanks

PAL, NTSC, and region code are different things. Roxio burned disc's have no region coding. Do a Google on them, you will see the difference.

cd

thanks for reply but not sure I understand. I finally found the Project Setting button under MyDVD Express and saw there the option between burning to NTSC or PAL. I chose PAL for the disc intended for Europe. Of course I cannot test it fully here in North America but it does evoke the error message, "prohibited wrong region" from my DVD player.

Am I doing all this worrying for nothing as a Roxio burn leaves the region code bytes empty and so such discs will play in any region?

This is a late post for this thread, but here goes...

Convert PAl to NTSC using VIDEOWAVE, but it will be a different format from the *.VOB. Then use VIDEO COPY & CONVERT to revert media file(s) back to *.VOB format and burn to DVD. It worked for me... and I'm using a 4-yr old Dell with small memory. The resulting DVD played on our SONY home theatre system (the original produced and error message, 'PLAYBACK PROHIBITED BY AREA LIMITATIONS').

Hope this was helpful. CIAO!

The DVD yopu make will be classed as 'Region 0' (ie, plays in any region

What your player is probably trying to tell you is 'I just can't play this at all'

European TV standards are 625 line and 25 fps, audio subsystem intercarrier FM and colour sub-system PAL

US is 525 line, 30 fps, audio sub-system AM and colour sub-system NTSC

You could have told what program you tried using…

With Disc Copier, select Video Compilation, choose the disc and set NTSC under Options on the Destination side.

I am using Roxio 8, disk copier, the window has 2 parts, (CD &DVD copy) and (Video Compilation).

I am using Video Compilation, here I have two parts, source and destination, under source I have selected my source , and under destination, I have 3 formats, DVD,DIVX, and WMV9, I have selected DVD, also on the "destination" panel, I have selected "Output To:" Disc/Disk Image.

Under Options, I have selected DivX/WMV Conversion, video Format NTSC, and checked the box that says "always convert to preferred video format (default).

But I still get PAL as the output.

I have never tried DC to convert PAL to NTSC! In fact I have never had a PAL file to even look at…

Plan B would be the route that Daithi suggested. Let us know how that works out.

I've tried this many times and gave up. I have a PAL 92 minute movie that I took into DC just as James mentions and as you can see, it still comes out PAL. I don't know if I'm missing something or just doing this wrong which is too easy to mess up.

I never did try but I guess I could simply convert to mpeg2 then take that into MyDVD and encode to DVD huh? Maybe next time I'll try that.

Amjad, it you do try this, please let me know if it works for you.
