also having a problem burning DVD's

LarryG

Question

I am also having a problem burning DVD's to play on my DVD players. I have valid Audio_TS and Video_TS files on my harddrive and can use DVD copy to burn a DVD. But these DVD's will not play on any of my players. They play just fine on both my Desktop and laptop. Am I missing something within my Roxio software? I have ver 7.5 all updates.

Next up top click the drive button. On the right side drive information. List the drive and firmware revision. Example mine BenQ DVD LS DW1655 firmware revision BCIB.

I want to know the model numbers of both settop players.

LarryG,

I need the drive information! What speed did you burn the above in ImgBurn?

Nope the DVD was a failure, was not copied correctly. Was just wondering if the Verbatim Disks are really as good a quality as they used to be.

I realize I'm coming in at the 11th hour with my $.02 - but I have a couple of thoughts/ideas/suggestions that might help.

I'm assuming you have the latest/greatest firmware in your drive. If not, you should update it as firmware updates are the way to teach your burner what proper write strategies are for newer media types.

I'm assuming you have properly created the video files and their directories on your hard disk to work from. Have you transcoded these files to fit on a single layer dvd media before running Roxio's disc copier program? I suggest you do that, so that when you burn your dvd, the only thing going on is the actual write/burn process. I never let the Roxio program perform transcoding during the actual write operation to dvd media.

Also be sure to give your Roxio program a "high" speed setting in your windows task manager and disable any non-essential resident programs while burning.

Select a write speed mid-way in the range of your media and drive capabilities. If I am burning using a 16x drive using 8x media, I choose a 4x burn speed. If you find that tiling and glitches show up more towards the end of your dvd when playing, this could be an indication of having a burn speed in excess of what the drive/media combination can handle comfortably, as whatever burn speed you've chosen is maximized towards the end of your burn (the outer rim of the media, where the fastest speeds occur within the average speed you have selected).

Select media that works best with your dvd drive. If you peruse videohelp.com, you will find some tables and user comments describing what media has worked best for others in your particular burner. You will also find a section that describes what types of media work in your dvd players also.

Lastly, pick up a few RW media so you can experiment until you've got the problem in hand without wasting a lot of write-once media.

SONY DRU-710A Dual DVD Recorder

Writing and reading speeds, the drive supports 16X (CAV) writing for DVD+R and 8X (Z-CLV) writing for DVD-R. RW formats can be both burned at 4X (CLV). The drive can also read DVD-ROM (pressed) up to 16X (CAV) while it offers 48X (P-CAV) / 24X (Z-CLV) specs for the CD formats.

Glad to hear a burned disc worked, remember what x speed Roxio set it at?

Your Sony DRU-710A is a (rebadged LiteOn SOHW-1633S/1653S) model.

Your X rating speed on Verbatim -R disc's are

Available Write Descriptor CLV 8.0x 11080KBps

Available Write Descriptor CLV 6.0x 8310KBps

Available Write Descriptor CLV 4.0x 5540KBps

keep your burn at 8x or below. Make sure the software sets it there!

If you start to have unreadable disc's on the settop players. Do the disc quality tests in DVDInfo Pro. It should show the media as the problem!

It could be a problem with the type of DVD you used for burning and the type of media that your settop DVD player accepts (this could be a problem for older versions of settop DVD player). Media can be DVD-R, DVD+R or DVD+RW. If you use the "dash" type and it doesn't play in your settop player, try the "plus" type (ask a friend if he/she has "plus" DVD disc to spare you before buying a package yourself).

I have tried DVD-r, DVD+r, and DVD+RW with the same results. DVD will play on my Computers, but will not play on my two DVD players. I think the software is not finallizing the dvd's for DVD, instead UDF 1.2.

This is happening on both my Desktop and laptop. So it has to be something common. I am beginning to think that maybe a Movie has placed something on the computers that will now not allow burning of DVD movies.

Are you formatting the disc? That's the only thing that would bring .udf into the picture.

Use a BLANK blank, directly out of hte package or off the spindle. You need to create a disc with the special set of files recognized as "DVD Video". If you format the disc (besides a lot of other problems that would cause), you are creating a special type of file known only to computers. (BTW - different programs use formatting that is incompatible with other programs, and sometimes different Versions of the SAME program)

My drives on desktop and laptops are all up to date. I tried copying a non protected DVD that I know works on my settop players, using Roxio disk copy. I burned on desktop at 8X. After burn I tried playing the dvd on my settop, and it said it could not play the DVD. I then decided to try the burn on another of our laptops, which does not have other burning software on it, only roxio. This copy would not also play on the settop. These copy's do play on my desktop and laptops without a problem. I am completely stumped. Thing the bugs me is it worked a couple of months ago without a hitch on my desktop.

Have you tried burning to an 'image file' instead of to the DVD? I know you said you used another program to make the image file, but I'd suggest you use DVD Builder to make the image file.

Then use Disk Copier to burn from the 'image file' (.iso) to the DVD.

I burn DVDs for members of a group I belong to and found that method burns DVDs that are compatable with more DVD players.

You also need to try + R and - R in your DVD player. Some will only play one type despite what the DVD Player specs say.

It's also possible that you got a bad batch of DVDs. I avoid buying DVDs at some stores because the packages frequently look like they have not been stored or handled properly.

I have used +RW, +R and -R with same results. Now that you mentioned it, the +RW actually worked on my downstairs Settop. I will have to try that again. My upstairs will only except -R DVD's.

I will try you idea on the image file. I used Imgburn to create the IMage than used Roxio to burn the dvd from the image, which had same results as before. Also burned the a dvd from Imgburn and same thing.

So why are you using Imgburn to create the image file?
